NIH leads the pack as Congress hikes basic research at several agencies.

Congress today overwhelmingly passed the 2016 spending bill. The House of Representatives this morning voted 316 to 113, with a majority of Republicans and nearly all Democrats favoring the $1.1 trillion package for all federal agencies. The Senate concurred a few hours later with a vote of 65 to 33. President Barack Obama is expected to sign it into law later today. (...) - Science, by Jeffrey Mervis, Dec 18, 2015

Strategy for 2020 aims to increase investment to €5 billion per year

The Irish government today released an ambitious 5-year vision for stimulating innovation. Developed by several agencies, the plan calls for increasing total investment in R&D by about a third to 2.0% of gross domestic product. In cash terms, that would mean a rise in public and private spending from last year’s €2.9 billion to about €5 billion per year in 2020. (...) - Sience, by Erik Stokstad, 8 December 2015

(...) - Le Devoir, 05/12/2015

Universities need to hone their argument for staying in the EU

Universities need to hone their argument for staying in the EU | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Emran Mian looks at four arguments that British universities have so far mustered for staying in the EU – and says universities must engage further, detail by detail, with the Eurosceptic rebuttals to these arguments. Even in universities the support for staying in the EU is soft. There is still time for universities to construct better arguments.
