UK: Visa policy warning

Tightened immigration controls may put graduate courses at risk.

A fall in the number of students entering the United Kingdom could cause problems for graduate courses in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), warns Universities UK (UUK) in London, which represents more than 130 institutions. According to the Office for National Statistics, 8.2% fewer international students arrived in the country in the year to March 2012 than in the previous year. The UUK says that the drop may be linked to changes that make visas harder to get. Jo Attwooll, a policy adviser for the UUK, notes that UK graduate STEM classes have tended to include a lot of non-European students. “Immigration policy could affect the number of students taking these courses and thus their viability,” she says.

New report says cluster hiring can lead to increased faculty diversity

New report says cluster hiring can lead to increased faculty diversity | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Cluster hiring -- or hiring multiple scholars into one or more departments based on shared, interdisciplinary research interests -- is growing in popularity. Increasingly it’s also seen as a way to advance faculty diversity or other aspects of the college or university mission, such as teaching or community engagement. But how effective is cluster hiring generally, and specifically in promoting diversity and creating a positive institutional climate? And what are some established best practices to those ends? Judith Shapiro calls for thinking about faculty roles and departments in new ways

Judith Shapiro calls for thinking about faculty roles and departments in new ways | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Faculty members should also consider how undergraduate departmental majors can connect more organically with one another and with the wider curriculum of the institution. This interest is not served simply by creating new interdisciplinary programs, since too often these have simply resulted in a proliferation of departmentlike entities and have failed to create greater intellectual coherence in the undergraduate experience as a whole.

Reproducibility and replicability: two means to reach a better oppennes of scientific data.

Pre-publication registration, post-publication peer-review, greater data openness; all these factors form a long list of potential solutions heralded as capable of improving study reproducibility and replicability in science. Though not everyone agrees, the world of scholarly publishing is in full debate mode. For example, intense discussions took place at the recent Royal Society meeting in the UK on the future of scientific scholarly publishing. A second meeting scheduled in Mayon the same theme will tackle reproducibility as one of its key focus points. (...) - EuroScientist Webzine, par Sabine Louët, 29 April 2015
