Not Another Brick in the Wall: Capitalism and Student Protests in Chile

A few days ago, I visited a high school in a poor urban area in Western Santiago and met with the junior and senior classes to discuss the student movement of 2011 in Chile. “What were the mobilized youth demanding?” I asked the students in the San Alberto Hurtado School. “Did they succeed?” The questions were relevant enough to keep the students engaged. They voiced their opinions and argued for a while, beating the somnolence induced by the heat and the preceding lunch. As I left, my thoughts went to Pink Floyd: these kids, many of whom had joined the protest the previous year, did not want to become just another brick in the edifice of a market economy. (...) It would be easy to think that the leaders of American higher education are all in when it comes to MOOCs. Dozens of colleges and universities -- many of them among the elites -- have rushed to offer massive open online courses. Top foundations back the effort. The American Council on Education has moved quickly to certify some of the courses as credit-worthy. Many other colleges are considering plans to award credit for MOOCs or to use them in instruction.

But it turns out that -- when asked privately -- most presidents don't seem sure at all that MOOCs are going to transform student learning, or reduce costs to students -- two of the claims made by MOOC enthusiasts and an increasing number of politicians and pundits. Du 9 au 15 mars 2013, EducPros a organisé un voyage d'étude dans la Silicon Valley en Californie, qui a réuni une quinzaine de participants, représentants de grandes écoles d'universités et du ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur. Cette excursion transatlantique a été l'occasion de visiter les universités de Berkeley et Stanford, de découvrir les fondateurs de MOOC (Khan Academy, Coursera) et d'échanger avec des représentants d'entreprises emblématiques du secteur (Mozilla, Linkedin). La Floride lance les premiers diplômes publics entièrement en ligne

L’année prochaine, les étudiants inscrits dans les universités publiques de cet état pourront obtenir un diplôme sans même aller sur le campus.

 

Petit à petit, les cours en ligne gagnent du terrain aux États-Unis. Contrairement à la France, où ils sont encore souvent perçus comme de vagues expérimentations, les états américains sont de plus en plus nombreux à leur accorder une reconnaissance officielle. Après la Californie ,qui avait partiellement ouvert la porte aux cours en ligne dans les universités d’État, la Floride vient d’annoncer que ses établissements publics proposeront dès la rentrée 2014 des formations diplômantes entièrement en ligne.
