I find it intriguing that the Bologna process is not in political trouble.

 

Some of the participants in the Bologna ministerial meeting in Bucharest last April were muttering that the process of building a European Higher Education Area was imploding after a decade. And as for those active in European politics and policy-making: they see Bologna and higher education in general as a poor relation in the European policy sphere.

 

But as the debt crisis has hit Europe, and Greeks and Spaniards and Italians are made politically fragile by austerity under European Union (EU) rules, it may be that the European tide is on the turn, and that the qualities of Bologna-style governance in creating a common area by national consensus are more widely recognised. Critics raise alarm bells over basic science funding

Chilean universities have spoken out against a high-level proposal that the country’s primary research funding agency be moved to the economy ministry.

The misgivings were sparked by a suggestion last month from Economy Minister Pablo Longueira that the National Commission for Science and Technology Research (Conycit) should be in his department and no longer in the Education Ministry, where it has been housed since its creation in 1967. Depuis plusieurs mois, le mouvement de protestation a donné lieu à des manifestations dans des pays aussi différents que les États-Unis, la Grande-Bretagne, la République tchèque, Taïwan, les Philippines, la Corée du Sud, le Chili et l'Ukraine....

Un an après, la révolte des étudiants chiliens ne faiblit pas

« On est puni pour vouloir étudier. J’ai emprunté 15 000 euros sur quinze ans, je me retrouve à rembourser presque le triple ! » explique avec véhémence José Valenzuela. « Le taux d’intérêt grimpe en flèche, sans explication », poursuit cet étudiant, qui doit verser au moins 200 euros à sa banque tous les mois, jusqu’en 2020. Aujourd’hui, José est en dernière année de sciences politiques à l’université Centrale (privée) de Santiago.
