Canadian scientists smile at Liberals' déjà vu budget

The first budget from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brought smiles to the faces of Canadian scientists last week. The Liberal government's 2015–16 fiscal blueprint pumps up the country's three funding councils after years of static or declining budgets. It also resurrects several initiatives from the last budget of a Liberal government, presented in 2005, before the Conservatives took power under Stephen Harper and launched what many scientists regarded as a "war on science." The new budget includes a host of scientific goodies—and promised more to come—that are part of what Finance Minister Bill Morneau called "a new vision for Canada's economy as a center of global innovation, renowned for its science, technology, resourceful citizens, and globally competitive companies. [US] New funding matchmaker will cater to NIH rejects | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Online pilot program will connect unfunded grant applications with foundations.

Last year, U.S. researchers received about 42,500 pieces of bad news from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Their grant proposal had been rejected; they wouldn’t be receiving a piece of the agency’s roughly $30 billion federal funding pie. For many, the next step is to cast around for slices of smaller pies—grants from nonprofit disease foundations or investments from private companies that might keep their projects alive.

[Italy] Plans for new research hub get critical reception

The Italian government has announced plans for the launch of the Human Technopole Italy 2040, a brand new research center for the life sciences that will be lavishly funded and housed at the stylish site of a former world expo in Milan. The effort would receive €1.5 billion over the next decade and focus on genomics, personalized medicine, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. The plans have drawn mostly criticism. Many researchers applaud the government for investing in science, but they object to the lack of transparency with which the new hub was hatched. And some worry that it won't benefit the best researchers and institutes but those with the best connections. (...) - Science, by Laura Margottini, 11 Mar. 2016
