Budget 2017: Mandatory spending dims prospects for Obama’s budget

Budget 2017: Mandatory spending dims prospects for Obama’s budget | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Republicans oppose president’s attempt to sidestep caps in budget agreement.

President Barack Obama and the Republican-led Congress reached an agreement last December on a 2-year spending plan that was supposed to lead to a temporary truce in the annual federal budget wars. But this week Obama broke that truce, at least in the eyes of most Republicans, with a 2017 budget request that aims to use revenue not covered by that agreement to boost the budgets of several research agencies. The fiscal legerdemain is likely to trigger even more of a partisan standoff with Congress and darken an already cloudy picture for U.S. researchers who rely on federal funding. A decade-long focus on excellence has inspired positive change in the university system, commission says.

BERLIN—Germany should award millions of euros in extra funding to its 10 top-performing universities, an international commission recommended today. That is one of the best ways to build on the country’s Excellence Initiative, a decade-long program that was supposed to boost German universities to world-class status. The commission, chaired by physicist Dieter Imboden of the ETH Zurich in Switzerland, presented its long-awaited evaluation of the program today. (...) - Science, by Gretchen Vohel, Jan. 29, 2016

Heureusement, on ne choisit pas un programme de formation aussi légèrement qu’un transport.

La menace «Uber» n’intervient pas que dans l’industrie du taxi, elle guette également les universités. Summit proposes steps toward biomedical workforce sustainability

Summit proposes steps toward biomedical workforce sustainability | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Workforce experts met in Washington, D.C., last week to discuss plans and goals for the future.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The idea that “hypercompetition” and lack of opportunity for aspiring scientists have made the biomedical research enterprise “unsustainable” has gained increasing acceptance since the publication of an influential 2014 article. Last week, two of that article’s authors—former Science Editor-in-Chief Bruce Alberts and former Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman—joined 25 other prominent figures from academe, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), scholarly organizations, industry, and disease advocacy groups here to work on initiatives to help improve the situation. Attention focused on funding, postdocs, staff scientists, and training for nonacademic careers. (...) - Science, by Beryl Lieff Benderly, Feb. 11, 2016
