Demonstrators in 14 cities criticize the government’s research policies.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA—Abandoning their usual reserve, nearly 1000 scientists across the country downed instruments and grabbed placards this week to protest pending job losses at the nation’s leading research organization, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). “Scientists are not known for rushing to the barricades,” says Anthony Keenan of the CSIRO Staff Association, who adds that while staff members are concerned about job cuts at CSIRO, they are “dismayed” at the government’s short-sighted approach to science.(...) - by Leigh Dayton, Science, 26 June 2014

Sri Lanka: Government closes all universities after two-month lecturer strike

Sri Lanka’s Higher Education Ministry last week closed down all state universities and several other higher education institutions until further notice. The decision was taken after a two-month strike by university academics reached a critical stage.

Gabriela Arellano, dirigeante de l'université des Andes à Merida, porte une minerve autour du cou et un bras en bandoulière après avoir été sérieusement agressée. Alors que les autorités savaient pertinemment que cette jeune femme se trouvait à Caracas, la porte de sa résidence à Merida a été enfoncée par un blindé de la Garde nationale bolivarienne (GNB). Les meubles ont été saccagés ou détruits, sa mère a été intimidée. « Il n'y a pas assez de blindés, de balles et de prisons pour faire plier tout un peuple, assure Gaby Arellano.
