Changes to employee benefits for scientists after FLSA

Changes to employee benefits for scientists after FLSA | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it
On Dec 1st, the threshold at which salaried workers receive overtime payment for working more than 40 hours per week will increase from $23,660 to $47,476 per year, under updates to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
We have been focusing on postdoctoral researchers (all postdocs working at a U.S. institution who are not in a primarily teaching role come under this ruling regardless of visa or funding source). But this also covers a range of other staff titles, such as staff scientists and technical staff. These staff may be easier to track on an hourly basis because of their difference in duties – namely, that they are not viewed as trainees seeking independent positions as part of their role – but some of them, who may have been exempt previously due to meeting the salary and duties exemptions here* may be becoming non-exempt. All postdocs working in the U.S. who are not in a primarily teaching role, come under this ruling, regardless of visa or fellowship status. Therefore institutions who do not currently pay their postdocs above this threshold will either have to choose to track the hours of a postdoc, or to raise salaries to the new threshold.(...) - Future of Research, by Gary McDowell, Sep 22, 2016

[Canada] Postdocs dissatisfied

Canadian survey respondents complain of low pay, meagre benefits and lack of careers training.

Nearly one-third of postdocs in Canada are ambivalent about or dissatisfied with their experience, a survey finds. For The 2013 Canadian Postdoc Survey, the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars and Vancouver-based non-profit research organization Mitacs polled 1,830 postdocs at 130 institutions in academia, government and the private sector. Nearly half were dissatisfied with benefits such as insurance or leave time, about one-third with training opportunities, and more than one-third with pay. Postdocs must negotiate for pay and benefits and seek out extra training themselves, says survey co-author Robert Annan, vice-president for research and policy at Mitacs. - Nature 502, 399 (2013), 16 October 2013

Tenure track: key to attract top talent?

Tenure track: key to attract top talent? | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it
Recruiting and retaining the best researchers is a key challenge for Europe. Talks about introducing an attractive career structures with prospects for advancement, such as a tenure track, are ripe. Well-established in the US and increasingly in the UK, tenure track provides a clear, merit-based system that takes excellent researchers from postdoc to professor. But even if it is desirable, it does not guarantee more time for research given the increasingly bureaucratic nature of the job of university professor. - See more at: http://euroscientist.com/2013/10/tenure-track-key-to-attract-top-talent/#sthash.soS61fWJ.dpufRecruiting and retaining the best researchers is a key challenge for Europe.

(...) - Rue89, par Bernardin, 20/09/2013
