Greece: Rector election sparks council vs academic conflict

The ‘election’ – or more appropriately the appointment – of a new rector at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is once again creating tension between the institution’s management council and its academic community.

Current rector Giannis Mylopoulos, whose term of office is rapidly coming to an end, recently wrote that “according to the new legal system the university authorities will no longer be elected by a direct and democratic vote but indirectly through a system of pre-selection which will be carried out – without specific criteria – by the institution’s management council”.

Austerity-led brain drain is killing Greek science

Austerity-led brain drain is killing Greek science | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Lack of funding and recruitment freezes are driving young researchers out of the country, warns Varvara Trachana.

Science in Greece is going backwards. This month, researchers lost access to the journal Bioinformatics, a top-ranked title in mathematical and computational biology. Many more publications are likely to disappear from Greek libraries. The Ministry of Education has not paid the bills for its subscription bundles. The largest publishers — including Elsevier, Springer and Taylor & Francis — have threatened to suspend access. Others have done so already. (...) - by Varvara Trachana, Nature, 17 April 2013

Varvara Trachana and Stelios Gialis: The Greek government has left around 750 newly elected university lecturers in unpaid limbo for up to four years.

Greece is reeling from six years of recession. Its economy resembles a 1930s-style Great Depression, with GDP having fallen by more than 20% and an official unemployment rate close to 30%. Among young, well-educated Greeks, unemployment hit 56.5% in early 2013. (...) - by
