Student debt rising

US postgraduate-student debt continues to escalate.

Education debt owed by US holders of master's degrees in science is snowballing, says a report from the New America Foundation, a non-profit public-policy group in Washington DC. Half of the graduates owed at least US36,000 in 2012, up 28 from 2008 levels. One-tenth owed 92,126 or more, up 36 from 2008. The proportion graduating with debt rose by almost 8, to 53.6, between those years. The Graduate Student Debt Reviewexamined data that the US Department of Education collects every four years. Report author Jason Delisle speculates that the increasing indebtedness will eventually spur government-led loan-forgiveness programmes. (...) - Nature 508, 277, 09 April 2014

I am not surprised about the debt students have in America. As a college student myself, I know very well how pricey college can be and where not talking about the extra materials you need for college. From college books, materials, room and board, America is asking for students to be in debt. College books run from 200-400$ depending on your class and that's on top of the loans you already owe for school. With these facts, America should take notice and try to find a plan to fix this. It is not ok for students to finally graduate college and be in debt. Since college and universities are so expensive some people cant afford to go to college. Many have a dream like all of us but there dream must be on hold because they need to work hours and hours to afford to pay for school. Yes, America wants there students to succeed but, being in debt in process of it is dissatisfying.

[UK] Student: My debt is 'horrifying' | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

The majority of students will still be paying off their loans in their 50s and may never repay it all, according to a report.

The study, commissioned by the Sutton Trust, suggested that three-quarters of graduates from England would have some of their loan written off.

Film and Media student Martha told BBC Radio 5 live Breakfast reporter Rowan Bridge: "It's scary, it's horrifying. It's such a large amount of money - I don't know what I'm going to do."

Criminology student Georgia agreed, saying "I don't think I'll ever be able to pay it off." (...) - BBC, 10 April 2014
