Exclusive interview: Jean-Pierre Bourguignon — the new no-nonsense ERC President | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Jean-Pierre Bourguignon has just been nominated President of the ERC for four years, renewable once. He is a French mathematician specialised in differential geometry, a field now often referred to as global analysis, and its connection to theoretical physics. He was trained at the prestigious elite school École Polytechnique. His appointment has been announced as he just retired following a long career at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Since 1994, he has been the director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS), an atypical multidisciplinary research institute, which is a private foundation, specialised in the theoretical aspects of sciences such as mathematics, physics and biology, staffed by two field medallists and regularly visited by two more. He shares his vision for his new role with the Euroscientist, in his first official interview after being nominated. (...) Euroscientist, 17th December, 2013

(...) CNRS, 10/12/2013

France's Message to Science: Help Us Fix the Economy

France's Message to Science: Help Us Fix the Economy | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

France's government hopes that science can help shore up the country's lackluster economy. On Tuesday, the National Assembly approved a new law that aims to simplify the national landscape for research and higher education and make it more efficient, better able to address societal and economic challenges, and more competitive at the European level. The bill, which comes hand in hand with a new strategic plan for France's research priorities, also gives the government a greater role in coordinating research. The bill and the road map have been sharply criticized by various groups of researchers and university professors.(...) - ScienceInsider, by Elisabeth Pain on 30 May 2013
