Mark Ayton's insight:

There are still Learning Providers wondering how to get the most from their VLE, how to improve learner engagement, how to make it somewhere students find appealing.

The answer could be as simple as being honest about what learners need. Start by analysing their learning needs: (A) Where are they now? (B) Where do they want to be? Then think about the support they need to get from A to B. As long as your VLE provides or directs learners to good support for the journey it will be used...

And it needn't be a "conventional" VLE, just an environment that supports learning!

Activity-led Learning Applied Research Group (ALLARG)

Activity-led Learning Applied Research Group (ALLARG) | Higher EdTech | Scoop.it
The Activity-Led Learning Applied Research Group (ALL) acts as a forum and a focus for activity-led learning pedagogical research.
Mark Ayton's insight:

This isn't strictly a tech-scoop, but learning isn't really tech either! A good activity can immerse learners in learning. It would normally occupy a good range of senses making it memorable and engaging. So why mention it here? Tech may well be able to enhance, expand, increase reach and depth, enable and add new dimensions to activities. Start with the activity idea and consider where and how far tech could take the learning...

Mark Ayton's insight:

The first platform many people are likely to think of when the phrase "Social Media" is mentioned is Facebook. It's also been quite contentious in the past for "blurring the lines" between teachers' and students' social and professional lives, and for the potential privacy risks. This hasn't stopped people wanting to know how it can be used effectively in education. Here's a nuts and bolts guide...

Mark Ayton's insight:
Ellis Booker provides a wealth of detail, rich in observations and quotes, that provide a snap-shot of experiences and current thinking from the front line of education. Tablets have an increasingly strong foothold, cloud computing is removing locational constraints, and the true value of IWBs is realised by giving control to the learners. Ok, it's not all cutting edge, but it is a very good summary of where we are.

Failure Is Mandatory: Creating A Culture Of Innovation - Edudemic | Higher EdTech | Scoop.it
Progressive school admins understand teachers need room to explore and experiment to uncover ways to use technology in creating a culture of innovation.
Mark Ayton's insight:

No-one is an instant success! Start with an idea to get your learners over a particular, possibly long-standing, hurdle. To overcome a hurdle a different approach will be required. Dare to try something new! It doesn't have to be perfect first time, but it will almost certainly be better than just accepting "this has always been a tough topic".
