The Problem With Our Social Media Addiction

The Problem With Our Social Media Addiction | High tech and art in the school. | Scoop.it

Earlier this year, a study found that social media is more addicting than alcohol and cigarettes.

This article is specifically about the media, and its use of social media, but I also feel that it also has some applications on the limits to technology in the classroom as well.

Jonathan Morgan's curator insight, December 10, 2015 11:02 PM

The opening statement of this article is enough to prove that social media is in fact addicting. Earlier this year, a study found that social media is more addicting than alcohol and cigarettes. I liked reading this article because it focused on very similar information to many of the modules I completed throughout this semester. It discuses how the problem lies in over-reliance on social networks, obsession with them, and over-dependency. It also discusses how social media use at a young age is certain to lead to an addiction. I think that us as individuals, should consider using social media networks much less than we do everyday. I think it would bring back old ways of society, like strict face-to-face interactions rather than typing through a screen. Unfortunately, it is not likely that social media usage will decrease any time soon. In fact, I believe social media use will only increase from here on out, let’s just hope we can find more positive aspects to incorporate with it’s usage.

34 Smart Ideas For Using Smartphones In The Classroom

Have students collaborate with their off-campus peers by exchanging phone numbers. This may sound far-fetched, but the organization is easy to set up. Through teacher communication, an explanatory permission letter, and a shared Google form/spreadsheet, appropriate information from many students could be distributed. Imagine, for example, three different classes from three different schools collaborating on a shared project.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, January 22, 2013 10:36 PM

This is a great article that demonstrates the value of curation in education (especially using the platform scoop.it).  Students today must sort through an array of online sources today.  As a professor/curator, I see part of my role being to present students with vetted, quality online information.  I demonstrate this in part ot provide materials for my students, but even more so to teach my students how to assess materials for themselves as they become the curators of information in their own right.
