Problem with what's taught in School History || Spoken Word - YouTube

Published on Feb 5, 2013 Title: History Textbooks The Problem with whats taught in School. What do you think? Comments? Thoughts? Lets start a conversation. ...
Dessy Gt's insight:

This video talks about the isuues minorities face when learning about history in school. I can relate to the issue that he addresses in this video. When I learn about US history I was discoraged by the negative portray of miniorities. Sometimes we forget that history is written by man it is his- story to tell and his opinions. There are biases and untold stories from different perspective. This is a issure that discorages minorites interest in history. They can never connect to the people and their ancestory are always protrayed in a negative image or the repeated token figure.

When I took history class I was very interested because all I learned about was Europeans and the slave trade. The same message being repeated with the same outcomes. I tried by best to be attentive and learn the information. When I took my finals for history class we was assigned to discuss what it means to be american and I took that opportunity to vent about issue that minorites have faced as the nationed improved and growth, the struggles they endured and look at the postivie aspect that miniorites overcome.

Three Needs of College Life

Three Needs of College Life | Various School Issues | Scoop.it
Nursing school problems
Dessy Gt's insight:

This picture addresses the problems that college kids face when they enter high education. They need to be able to manage all three aspects in order to create a good college experience. Students want to have good grades and explore their social enviroment but they also need to make good use of the weekend through relaxing moments or studying. I think as a college student getting good grades is imporant but having enough sleep and being social are factor that effect your grade tremenously. Some students underestimate the need for sleep and the braid ability to function and coordinate information. Student think that being socially relevant with their freinds improve their personality, but they can also do the same thing in the classroom while learning together.

As a college student I can relate to the need of these three things in the pyramid. I try to stress good grades and good sleep. If i am sleepy, I am very cranky, sleepy and less interesting in learning. By getting good grades I am encouraged to do better and make my family and parents proud of me.

The students talked about lack of motivation because they find it hard to think abou the future and opportunities that lie ahead from education. The students talked about parents influence on education and their views on education and how it can impact a students interest in education. The students talked about teacher trying harder and incorporating hands on activities that may peak the child's interest. The students talked about the various test standards that the students have to achieve and the changes in each stardard.

I think these issues are very important becuase they impacted me in high school and as students learn in different ways teachers need to model the same flexibility and encourage their students the importance of education and the opportunities available to them.

New Dorp High School Principal Helps Turn Around Failing School - New Dorp - Prevent violence

Principal Deirdre DeAngelis has raised the graduation rate by focusing on writing skills.
Dessy Gt's insight:

This article is about how a school in New York turned their school around and improved the environment and academics of the students. The school improved the structure of the building and added the Judith Hochman Writting Program.  This program focus on the basic writting skills of the students to help them do project based learning projects and research to learn about new things. They improved their writting and enaged in writting activities to express themselves. Academic scores went up in the school and more students and parents wanted to enroll in the school. I think it was very creative for New Dorp to turn their school around and improve the students academics with this writting program. Students need time to express themselves and to be able to  release stress from school and home. By working on writting skills these students learn to express themselves as well as write about topics that they enjoy. By connecting writting with what they like, they do research paper and bigger things and enchance their writting abilities.

Effective studying

Effective studying | Various School Issues | Scoop.it
Grad school problems lol
Dessy Gt's insight:

This picure from pinterest summaries a main issue that student face as they reach higher education. There is more avaiable subjects that the students can take interest in and it encourages them to know more. The problem with learning is knowing how to study what you learn effectively in order to be tested on it. Students lack the skills to study the material that they learn and some do not know how to study or how much time is reccomented when studying.

As a student I have always struggle with math, and I did not know how to study well for my test. By going to my teacher for assistance and doing more practice problems I was able to study the material better and be confident to try the material on my own for more practice. Student who fail their test due to poor studying skills, decrease self esteem and interest in school. I think by encouraging students to study they can retain information and be better test takers.

Fitting In at Suburban Schools

Fitting In at Suburban Schools | Various School Issues | Scoop.it
Minority young men are considered by their white peers to be cool and tough; minority young women, on the other hand, are stereotyped as "ghetto" and "loud."
Dessy Gt's insight:

This article talks about the advantages that black boys have  when they try to fit in predominately white school. It reveals the dilemma that many black females face: having to combat both racism and sexism. Black males are judged base on positive sterotypes and are rewarded more for social rewards. Girls on the other hand experience social isolations and are judged based on negative sterotypes. It also peaks into diversity and Affirmative action.

I think this article shows a different perspective of how minorities play on their gender roles, how teachers treat the students and  students interactions with non-minorities. A peer from my high school commented on this post about her experience in a predominately white school. She liked a boy and the kids judged her based on negative sterotypes and it was very hard for her to be acceptable by her peers.. It lower her self esteem and she said it discourage her from expressing her feelings.

This is an issue that minorities in high school may face and it can be different for boy and girls. This is the perspective from an African American but im sure it is the same in different aspects for different minorities. Being a minority in my school, I notice that my personality is more timid and reserve compare to being in my previouse Universtiy. I was less shy and i made friends fairly quickly.

Philosophy of the Hochman Program

Philosophy of the Hochman Program | Various School Issues | Scoop.it
Judith Hochman: author of Teaching Basic Writing Skills, creator of the Hochman Program, and founder of the Windward Teacher Training Institute
Dessy Gt's insight:

Baisc writting kills were lacking in this school and by reenforcing them to high schoooler has reduced violence and improve the academics of the students. This program is important because it helped kids learn how to express themselves and practice critical thinking. Making sure children in elementary school practice writting and learn it will prevent them from giving up when academic become difficult and it will help them to go further in their education.

School Violence: How to Prevent School Violence

School Violence: How to Prevent School Violence | Various School Issues | Scoop.it
Dessy Gt's insight:

This article talks about the different issues that students face today compare to students in the 1940s. In the past problems that was a issue was talking out loud, chewing gum, noise, running, dress code and littering. Today issues include drug , alcohol and physical abuse, pregnancy, suicide, rape robbery and assault. The type of violence can be verbal, physical, threats, weapons, and pushing. A chart was made to identify the percentage of students victimitize , perpertracted and the gender of the student. Causes of violence can range from poverty, discrimination, competitiviness, immigration and dosmetic abuse. Through these various forms of violence school management depends on how they address these problems and their students. Preventitive programs can be school management programs, environmental modification program, and educational & curriculum based programs. Each program depends on the student body group, the type of school and how well both are able to coopertate and create a safe environment. It is important to reward good behavior and punish bad behavior so student can learn about consequences.

My high school faced gang violence that disrupt the school environment and the students. There was not enough secerity guards and food fights were happening every week. When i revisited my High School , I learned about their improvements to decrease violence and make the school better for the students.
