Legislation, Regulations, and Guidance - High School Initiatives also known as School Dropout Prevention Program

This page lists statutes, regulations, legislation, policy guidance, and flexibility provisions for the High School Initiatives also known as School Dropout Prevention Program.
Aaliyah Canzater's insight:

This is the copy of the Dropout Prevention Act. Its purpose serves to prevent dropout. By doing so the schools must allow reentry. However there are guidelines in place about who can reenter high school. Raising academic achievement levels are apart of this act. Raising academic achievement is just talking about the schools curriculum and not "dummying students down." In this act we also see brought up the options of school providing grants. Grants are giving to the student, funded by the government or community to help fund ones education.Grants are giving upon finical qualification. Some grants are giving as scholarships,  others as loans.

High School Dropouts Blame Lack of Parental Support, Teen Pregnancy - US News | High School Drop Out | Scoop.it
Nearly a quarter of dropouts cite disengaged parents as the reason they quit school, a new report says.
Aaliyah Canzater's insight:

So far i have neglected to introduce a newly wide spread cause, or reasoning for high school drop outs. And if you have not guessed it already. It is teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy can effects both the parents in the situation. For these new expecting parents leaving school to get a job to support their little one is a must. john Swartz regional director of Everest college says "Schools need to understand what motivates students to drop out in order to address the problem." and concluded saying "I believe high schools throughout this country make student graduation their No. 1 priority, Any data that helps them achieve that goal is going to benefit society as a whole"

Dropout Prevention - YouTube

Turning the Tide, a video produced by America's Promise Alliance for its Dropout Prevention campaign.
Aaliyah Canzater's insight:

This film sponsored by the Americans Promise Alliance. In this film we learn some staggering statistics. Did you know that if minority students graduated by 2020 the economy could stimulate 310 billion dollars? We also learn the general statistics of why students do not graduate on time. 70% say they were not motivated. 50% of students say they just was not interested. However 80% of jobs require post secondary schooling, but 70% of 8th graders are not reading proficiently. 42% of all students just aren't ready for college. Its hard not to have nightmares about the future after watching these crazy statistics. Its important to be an adult that values your child education, provide a health start, and give children opportunities to help others so that we can change these statistics.

Why students drop out of school?

Aaliyah Canzater's insight:

Gabriel focuses in some why teens are giving up so close to graduation. She cites some credible statistics, from different sources. In her blog she mentions "

I have friends who are high school dropouts and are working seven days a

week and getting paid the minimum. They actually feel that they are making a lot more

money without a high school diploma than someone who actually has one. They probably

think that because since that is their first job, they are just pleased to receive a paycheck

that is more than what their parents gave them for allowance each week."

Many individuals dropout to make more money. High School students drop out of high school to take minimum wage jobs. Without school eating 8 hours out of there day they can make more money. However for a low amount of pay you have to work more. Whereas if you complete school and get a degree you can work-less and get paid more. You also will not be bound to a specific job, or work field for the rest of your life (particularly speaking.) Not to mention you'll have to be prepared to work harder for less.

Aaliyah Canzater's insight:

This image can be looked at through different perspectives. However its looks as though this is an artist who's not favorable of the school system. Looks as though he's portraying the principals, or heads of an institution as if they do not care about students. The leaders of the institution are talking. This picture could also say that the education system is that in which is impossible for students to obtain, or reach. Two out of the five students can't get a diploma. One girl is reaching for it but it appears that she has fallen into a trap. One guy is trying to get up, but he's having trouble holding on. Unfortunately we know with out help, he will fall. The students behind the girl falling do not seem to care, they appear use to it. One thing about this picture it does not seem to represent any ethnicity's so it looks just like a generalization of students.
