Six Key Servant Leadership Attributes

Six Key Servant Leadership Attributes | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it

The 21st century has brought much in the way of turmoil and change to the world of business. As a consequence, ways of doing business that were once universally accepted now seem outdated and inflexible in an age where knowledge drives economies and socially responsible corporate attitudes influence stakeholders and shareholders alike.

With such changes have come new priorities and responsibilities and it is in this environment that the theory of servant leadership has flourished as a management style for the redefined business world of today, one that can serve as a cornerstone for organisations wishing to build corporate structures based on stewardship, empowerment and trust.

(From the article) Servant leadership will benefit organisations dependent on knowledge workers and in environments where high levels of creativity and innovation are the norm. Knowledge workers in particular require a sense of autonomy in order to function at their best and it is the responsibility of the servant leader to create this workplace freedom for them.

Slow is Fast - #Leadership | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
Patricia D. Sadar - Career and Leadership Acceleration Coach's insight:

I know the fast pace that we are all going to run through our days, and check off our to-do lists.

This one piece of advice is one of my favorites that I give to those who I coach.  When it comes to people...Slow is Fast.

Let me explain.  Whether we want to communicate a goal or give feedback we should all be reminded to take a second to think about what success looks like and who our audience is.  This helps us to think clearly, communicate clearly, and build relationships.

So often a message is misunderstood not because of what was said; however, how it was said.

So keep this reminder in mind to think with the end in mind, and to adjust your message to your audience.  It really helps!

Until next time....PS - Live on Purpose!

I absolutely love this quote!

Challenges, Mistakes, and Misunderstandings are all learning opportunities.  Each make us stronger as long as we learn, and avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Think about a situation that happened recently that did not go as you expected.  Stop.  Make a point to reflect on what you could have done differently.

Most importantly, shake it off and remember as long as you learned -- you grew from the experience!

When we are direct, are understood, are reliable, and trustworthy, we send signals about being responsible. The era of accountability and transparency are not about responsibility. We can still hide necessary information in being transparent. We cannot when we are responsible.

Frank J. Papotto, Ph.D.'s curator insight, June 4, 12:29 PM

Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (aka VUCA)  does require good leadership. But all of the DURT behaviors are important and should be practiced regardless of conditions. Trust as we know is important for robust engagement, clarity is important for  broad alignment, directness is important for superb execution and reliability is important in sustainable adaptation.  Leadership's purpose in VUCA situations and, in general, is to maintain and build effectiveness in achieving results; the DURT behaviors and other Purposeful Leadership  behaviors is at the heart of organizational success regardless of circumstances.

#Leadership Words to live by!

#Leadership Words to live by! | Leadership Advice & Tips | Scoop.it
Patricia D. Sadar - Career and Leadership Acceleration Coach's insight:

When I read this quote today, I could not wait to share it.  I don't know if anyone has ever taken on the challenge of eliminating excuses all together; however, I can tell you it is not as easy as it sounds.

I challenged myself over a year ago to start removing words and habits that did not serve me.  I initially  thought that I rarely made excuses; however, when it was on my radar I started noticing that was not the case.

I would make comments to my kids like, I didn't get to that because....then I noticed that I was making excuses for everyone around me (my family, friends, etc.)

It took some time to re-wire my thoughts, words, and actions.

So the challenge is this:  for those of you who have done this, what advice and lessons do you have to share?

For everyone else -- why not challenge yourself to eliminate excuses.  The huge benefit that I noticed is that I hold myself to higher standards and hold myself to be accountable for my actions and decisions.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Lisa McCarthy's curator insight, July 3, 7:01 AM

It takes maturity and humility and wisdom to grasp that oftentimes the best thing you can do with that spotlight is to put it on those around you, so that they blossom in ways they didn’t realize were possible … and so that your organization can benefit fully from their fully developed talents.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 3, 1:19 PM

There is a lot of servant-leadership in this article. I thought about how often I heard School managers spoke using language that suggested ownership. For example, my School, my teachers, my leadership, etc as if they were the only ones who had a vision.

TRUST … the only kind of influence that really matters

There is a quote:

The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. ~ Kenneth Blanchard

When we think like that, we only think about us – we are egoistic and selfish and aim on our personal success.

Our future lies in other people and their success.
Our goal should always be giving people our trust that they learn to trust us.
And giving our trust has nothing to do with aiming on trustworthiness.
Others should be trustworthy for us.
When we see others with a human heart, when we see their soul and humanity, we see their trustworthiness.

By 2025, they will comprise 75% of the workforce.Due to demographic shifts, including more experienced Baby Boomer workers retiring, it is essential to engage Generation Y now so they are able to fulfill expected talent shortages in the near future. Developing a strong leadership pipeline and expertise are key to business continuity.Unfortunately, many organizations are not prepared to attract, engage, and retain Generation Y employees because they continue to use management practices that are off target.
