Don't ask What's in it for me!

Don't ask What's in it for me! | High Performing Leaders | Scoop.it
Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

When we first began in our careres perhaps we asked the What's in it for me question constantly in our personal and work environments.  Fair enough, as teenagers and young adults that was common.

As you search for the top most successful leaders you will see that they may have one trait in common...they look for opportunities to help others. These elite leaders care more than they have to about their people.  They get to know them as people -- not just employees.  They take time to build trust, and they prioritize their teams.

Brian Tracy's quote says is beautifully.  Great character is built on adding value and helping people to reach their potentials.

How Real Leaders Demonstrate Accountability

How Real Leaders Demonstrate Accountability | High Performing Leaders | Scoop.it
Everyone wants to be a leader. However, few are prepared to accept the accountability that goes with it. But you can't have one without the other.
Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

Love this article!!!

Taken from the article:  "First and foremost, it means that you accept responsibility for the outcomes expected of you—both good and bad. You don’t blame others. And you don’t blame the external environment. There are always things you could have done—or still can do—to change the outcome.

Until you take responsibility, you are a victim. And being a victim is the exact opposite of being a leader."

The article gives examples of how to be accountable without making excuses or blaming the exernal environment.  I was told once that true accountability is absent of all excuses...that means that they don't save sorry I was late, BUT, etc. etc.  (I am going to challenge myself this entire week to be more accountable in everything I do -- how about you?  Are you willing to take the challenge with me?

Finishers make the world go. 70-Percenters are along for a fun ride, but they don’t provide much locomotive power. Here are 5 key behaviors of Finishers.
Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

Great article definitely worth reading!

In my humble opinion finishers get results despite of the obstacles.

They ask the right questions

They are not solely interested in achieving the results...they are committed

That means that they are disciplined, focused and persistent.

Finishers are leaders that can inspire their teams to act, believe, and achieve...not because they have to; however, because they want to!

Is Your Core Competence Still Relevant?

The problem for many leaders is that this line of thinking is the opposite of lessons they've learned for much of their careers: Stick to your knitting; stay with your core competencies.
Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

Outstanding article!!!

As a leader the question is what can we do to ensure that our business strategy is relevant today and in the future?

The  Outside In and Future Backcan process ensures that you do a full SWOT Analysis as part of your annual strategic planning process, and scan the external environment (laws, technology, environmental, politcal arena, financial arena, competition, and global trends) and look towards your business from the lens other than your own.

  • Future-Back requires you to look towards the future of all possibilities twenty years out.

Then having contingency plans such as Plan B, C and also back up plans such as Z plans in place.

Those who tell stories rule the world - Plato

Challenge us to...Disconnect to Connect this week!

Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

As leaders we are faced with such a difficult landscape.  We have more technology to send information to millions of people at an instant -- yet more than ever with the very technology we are using we are losing the battle at times with truly connecting and reaching the hearts and minds of our teams.

Sometimes is easy to lose our way, because technology is leading us instead of us leveraging technology in strategic purposeful ways.

With organizations we send out so many emails and communications and don't understand why we are not getting the results we intended.

George Bernard Shaw said, “The problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”Most organizations fall short from communicating effectively because they don’t tell their story effectively.

This is a challenge for all of us this week to do 2 things:

1.  Do your best to Disconnect to connect this week.  I mean put down your iphones and bbs and be there...talk to your team, walk into their office.

2.  If there are issues -- tell the story and watch their body language to see if you achieved your goal. Stories reach the hearts first

Please share with us your success stories and what you do to disconnect to connect and to effectively tell stories.

7 Things Confident Leaders Don't Do

7 Things Confident Leaders Don't Do | High Performing Leaders | Scoop.it
In a world full of wannabe entrepreneurs and leaders, don't try to be what you're not.
Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

Wow.....such an interesting article --so true!

The top things most successful leaders don't do:

1.  They don't do what everyone else does; They Always go above and beyond to achieve goals

2.  They don't waste time; They work hard on staying on course, and avoiding getting derailed.  They focus their time and energy on what matters most....not what matters least.

3.  They don't focus on what they can't do; They know their strengths, where they want to be, and then they quickly set course.  They put all of their energies on what is within their control -- laser focus.

4.  They don't think they can do it alone; The most confident leaders are humble, and seek out advice, assistance, and expertise.  Its not about them, its about their teams, and accomplishing the goals!

5.  They don't think that they always know best; The most confident leaders are curious to learn.  They listen to the ideas of others.  They listen to understand.

What else do you think should be on the list?

Are you an Invisible Leader?

Are you an Invisible Leader? | High Performing Leaders | Scoop.it
Patricia D. Sadar's insight:

Are you an Invisible Leader?

In my humble opinion I believe Tao Te Ching refers to the invisible leader clearly...

Tao Te Ching stated:  "With the greatest leader above them, people barely know one exists. Next comes one whom they love and praise. Next comes one whom they fear. Next comes one whom they despise and defy.

When a leader trusts no one, no one trusts him.

The great leader speaks little. He never speaks carelessly. He works without self-interest and leaves no trace. A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when all is finished and his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves."

I know that it feels good to feel needed by your team.  I know that it feels super to be told that the team achieved the excellent results because of your leadership.  Personally, it feels good; however, is that the goal of a leader?   It is hard to be invisible (I don't mean not when you need to be available to your team)

It takes a humble and confident leader to always give the credit away, and to empower and involve a team to the level that the team does believe that they took the ball and ran with it.
