Global Education: 21st Century skills | High Performance Learning | Scoop.it

Ahead of his 2017 Australian Learning Lecture, Charles Fadel joins Teacher to discuss the skills young people today will need in order to thrive as members of the workforce and of society.

Adrian Bertolini's insight:
We need an Australia that believes that the safest option we have for our kids is to educate them to learn, unlearn and relearn in our fast-changing world. We need forces beyond school to assist, not hamper, this process.

How well are we learning from NAPLAN?

How well are we learning from NAPLAN?  | High Performance Learning | Scoop.it

Some Australian schools and school systems have seen greater improvements in NAPLAN results than others. How well do we understand where improvements are occurring and why? Professor Geoff Masters AO discusses.

Adrian Bertolini's insight:
I work as an educational consultant across Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. What I have noticed in QLD and WA which is not occurring in Victoria is that schools have been instructed by the state government (whether it is explicitly or implicitly I don't know) to teach to the test to get their school results up. Teachers constantly complain to me regardless of the school I visit about the time taken from their teaching to ensure students are ready for NAPLAN. I am not sure if the schools are embedding good literacy and numeracy practices throughout their schools or if they are masking this by ensuring their NAPLAN results look good. I think a bit more digging needs to be done on a school by school basis

Be The Change You Want to See By Shifting Traditional High School

Be The Change You Want to See By Shifting Traditional High School | High Performance Learning | Scoop.it
At this big traditional high school teachers are taking the lead in the push for interdisciplinary, future-focused teaching practices.
Adrian Bertolini's insight:
One of the big goals of the N.E.W. program is to create a learning environment where students are empowered and supported to be independent learners. That can be a challenge for students arriving to the program with eight or nine years of experiences with teachers who tell them exactly how to do well. Students in the N.E.W. program struggled with the freedom of the program at first and asked for more direct instruction.

Growth Mindset Is Not Enough

Growth Mindset Is Not Enough | High Performance Learning | Scoop.it
To help students face life’s challenges, teachers should seek to help them develop a broad set of skills.
Adrian Bertolini's insight:
The issue I have with a lot of articles about Growth Mindset is that they miss the underlying neuroscience of WHY we have these types of mindsets in the first place. Due to this they then gloss over the power of how to work with others to create an environment and structures that encourage a particular mindset. Whilst this article does attempt to give a broader context for working with young people it still misses the point.
