Ascoli Piceno among Europe’s Best Towns and Cities where to live for $2,500 a Month or Less

Ascoli Piceno among Europe’s Best Towns and Cities where to live for $2,500 a Month or Less | Hideaway Le Marche | Scoop.it

Many expats are drawn to the idea of retiring in Europe, but can be thrown off by the high prices of its most famous destinations. But while big cities such as Paris and Madrid may hit hard on the wallet, there are still many alternatives for those seeking the romance of Europe, but at an affordable cost. [...]

Sarah Topps's insight:
We certainly agree. Ascoli Piceno is one of our favorite places to visit too and although personally we would never choose to live in a city (we love the countryside too much!), if we did, it would be Ascoli! You can even stay at The Hideaway with us whilst house hunting as we are only 30 minutes away!

Mariano Pallottini's curator insight, September 15, 12:56 PM

Ascoli Piceno, at the southern edge of Le Marche, is a gorgeous town of medieval monuments and Renaissance splendor, which is largely overlooked—but it shouldn’t be. It offers a high quality of life in its beautiful historic center, where everything you need is at your doorstep, and where events and exhibits regularly liven up the town.

The locals like to point out that Ascoli Piceno is older than Rome. They’re rightfully proud of their city and their lifestyle. It is beautiful and relaxed, and there is always something to do: an art exhibit among Roman ruins, cinema under the stars in a 15th-century cloister, concerts in the piazza, and a twice-weekly market that rolls into town. The velvet-clad opera theater is an opulent venue, while homey food festivals provide inexpensive (and delicious) fun.

In addition to the beauty and quality of life, Ascoli Piceno retains its small local shops, where fresh produce, locally raised meat, and regional products can be procured at good prices. Restaurants are plentiful, with excellent fare that won’t break the bank either. You can dine out and enjoy a bountiful meal for about $20 per person.

International Living Correspondent Valerie Fortney Schneider says that Ascoli Pisceno “offers the classic Italian lifestyle of good food, great wine, and cultural attractions for around $2,000 a month for a couple, and that’s including rent.

Apartments in the historic center can be rented for around $530 a month. If you are looking to buy, you can expect to pay $95,000 and $165,000 for a historic center apartment, while a two-bedroom townhouse will set you back about $184,000.

Musical chairs and mountain mishaps in the Apennines

Collamato, near beautiful Fabriano in the Marche, crowns a foothill of the Apennines. We went for my stepson’s wedding. In our apartment, attached to the castle walls, a lizard skidded frantically on tiles buckled by the recent earthquake. I helped the old ladies of the village prepare paninis for the reception in the village hall, where the Irish and English taught the Italians to play musical chairs. The language barrier was overcome by smiles and gestures.

We had a week of fun, visiting elegant Urbino one day, the dramatic limestone caves of Sassoferrato another, eating in hilltop restaurants and getting lost in the mountains.

Returning years later to stay with our daughter-in-law’s mother, we were welcomed as Padre di Tom and Mama Due, and plied with wine made from his own grapes by Honorio, the shopkeeper. The two breakages during musical chairs game had been forgiven.

Here the highlight about Le Marche:

"To the east bordering the Adriatic sits the region of Le Marche famed for its spicy fish stew, brodetto all’anconetana. But we skip its capital Ancona and head to the coastal town of Senigallia for two star Michelin treat Uliassi run by brother Mauro and sister Catia as chef and maître d’ respectively. Naturally a seafood inspired restaurant. Star dish from our dinner? A deep fried bread crust sandwiched with red mullet and dipped into a parsley anchovy soup.

Earlier in the day we pop into a stunning vineyard and winery, Cantina La Murola in Urbisaglia that unusually only produces single grape wines. My favourite from the wine tasting is Jole, a rose spumante using the charmat method similar to the PDO-protected prosecco. Sadly they do not yet export to Dubai.

Slow food artisan producers in Le MarcheThe following day we visit a trio of artisan producers that all embrace the Slow Food Movement’s principles – and all are open for public visits and shopping.

Trionfi Honorati in Jesi is a cheese maker selling over 20 buffalo (famed for its lower fat content) and cow milk cheeses from her farm (try the buffalo milk yoghurt); Sigi all-natural jams where I pick mulberries straight off the tree and into my mouth (jams are available at Heinz Beck’s Taste of Italy in Dubai; and cured pork heaven at Salumi Monterotti in Sarnano with a selection of hams, salamis including a PGI (protected geographical indication) delicious buttery ‘ciauscolo’, porchetta and matured pork loin."

Raising Funds To Feed The Displaced Pets of The Italian Earthquake - Timeline | Facebook

Raising Funds To Feed The Displaced Pets of The Italian Earthquake. 397 likes · 689 talking about this. We are raising money to buy pet food to tak
Sarah Topps's insight:
When we first moved to Le Marche in 2007, we never thought we would be helping in an earthquake disaster zone. There were 422 animals who lost their homes after the L'Aquila Earthquake in 2009 and they were being cared for by just 6 wonderful volunteers who kept them all fed, watered and cleaned and worked tirelessly round the clock. They had no food and the dogs and cats were fed stale bread roll left over by the local restaurants. We started a collection and raised 150 euros - enough money to by a tonne of pet food, for which the canile were very grateful.

When the 6.2 earthquake struck once again on 24th August 2016 at 3.36am, only 25 miles in a direct line from The Hideaway, we knew immediately this was going to be disaster once again. We set up a Facebook page straight away to raise funds to buy food and medicines urgently needed for the displaced animals and the rescue workers.

We were totally astonished to raise over €5000 in under a week thanks to all our friend and family spreading the word. The power of Facebook working for the good of a terrible situation.

We have just returned from the first delivery of medicine and food and much needed equipment and whilst the devastation was shocking, we met the most amazing people working round the clock. We had some laughs and made some cry with all the kindness from us foreigners!

If we have made the lives of the animals and the workers a little more comfortable today, then we are happy and we will do all we can to keep spreading the word and raise more very much needed funds. Please donate today if you possibly can.

The title of the Italian province of Le Marche literally means “the borderlands”, a neutral region neighbouring more important places.
