What a tough life! I wake up in the morning wondering "what will I do today"' drive to the beach, Ascoli, or go to Tuscany for the day (okay I'm a show off). Today the beach won out since they're forecasting rain for the next 2 days. I drove up a small coastal road from San Benedetto Del Tronto to Pedaso.  Although San Benedetto was nice, with palm trees, beautiful beach and trendy restaurants, it was a bit too touristy. Stopped for a quick lunch and then visited the small town of Grottammare which was amazing.

The international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) reported that has risen this year the number of Italian beaches to be awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award for clean water and pristine sands.

Italian seaside resorts awarded a Blue Flag in 2013 were 135, four more than last year, for a total of 248 top beaches. Some 86% of last year's Blue Flag beaches were confirmed this year while nine new entries included resorts in Carrara, Tuscany, Francavilla al Mare in Abruzzo and a lake beach resort in Levico Terme, in the north-eastern Trentino-Alto Adige region. The northwest coastal region of Liguria has the cleanest beaches in Italy, 20, two more than last year, followed by the central Marche region with 18 and Tuscany with 17, one more than last year.

Pristine eco friendly beaches could be considered another reason to visit lovely Le Marche.

There are many variations between different cultures and countries when it comes to food and wine.  But few people would disagree on the importance of food, wine and the dining experience at the Italian table.So, where to start?

Le Marche like the rest of Italy, offers a huge range of fantastic local food so eating out isn’t an expensive custom. You can enjoy a large variety of the finest local fish or meats and an absolute ‘must’ from the long list of different pasta dishes on offer is the very famous “maccheroncini di Campofilone? So, what about the wines from Le Marche?

Large quantities of great wines are produced in the region, and they are now becoming well known throughout much of the world. As you would expect, making one choice isn’t easy! How can you decide between one great wine and another?

The shrine of San Nicola da Tolentino, the Augustinian friar who died in 1305, is one of the most important in Italy. The Cappellone chapel is of great artistic value, with its beautiful frescoes by the Giotto school and its cloister, both fourteenth century. The saint's remains are preserved in the crypt. The Museo del Santuario, which boasts several important collections and exhibition sections, is housed in rooms adjacent to the convent, home to an Augustinian community. The collection of paintings, sculptures, vestments and religious furnishings includes many works that reveal the history of the shrine. One outstanding painting is a large canvas depicting the Eternal Father Blessing, as well as a lunette with gold frame depicting a Pieta, both dated 1518-1523 and part of the sanctuary's large altarpiece. The 1300s wooden Nativity, formed by statues of the Mary, Jesus and St Joseph, is one of the oldest sculptures in the Marches and hence very valuable. There are many silver objects on display, including reliquaries, monstrances, candlesticks, chalices, censers, votive silver leaf, which are part of the sanctuary's assets. The pottery section was donated to the municipality of Tolentino in 1933 by Cardinal Giovanni Tacci and includes important artefacts from leading Italian potteries of various periods (including a shepherd-boy statuette by Giovanni della Robbia), and items from English, Japanese and Chinese potteries. There is also a quite unique collection of votive offerings - about 400 small paintings on wood, paper or canvas depicting the miracles and graces attributed to St Nicholas. They are testimonials of the devotion of the faithful from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth, and are remarkable illustrations of local customs and institutions in the various periods. The museum also includes a crèche scene that is in operation all year round, as well as an exhibition of contemporary Italian and international crèches, as well as a diorama of the life of St Nicholas.

Built around the second half of the ninth century on the hill Colcù in Caldarola and subsequently amended at the end of the sixteenth century with the intentions of the cardinal Evangelista Pallotta to use the fortification as his summer residence.
The improvements in the Renaissance style celebrate the prestige of Pallotta Family which also included four Cardinals.
The prestigious residence hosted, among others, Pope Clement VIII and Queen Christina of Sweden.

From Ascoli, head up towards Colle San Marco to the south. You will pass a nice osteria called C'era una volta and later reach the little town of Piagge. Just before exiting the town, you will see a little brown sign on your right with a sharp right turn to get up to the little church of San Bartolomeo where you can park and read the sign above in either italian or english before taking the trail to the left of the church up to the cemetery. You can save a couple of hundred meters climbing if you park instead at the cemetery. Either way, the trail starts to the right of the enclosed cemetery and not to the left which also has a well marked road but is posted as private property. The climb is easy and takes 15 minutes or a bit more and is well marked. 

Head left and in just a few minutes you will arrive at the beautiful arched stairway which leads into the little monastery.
This was built 8 hundred years ago, which makes it all the more impressive. Obviously subsequent works have been done to make the whole thing safer so we can still visit today.

La superficie boschiva totale è di 308.000 ettari

Per ogni cittadino marchigiano ci sono circa trecento alberi. Il dato è stato diffuso oggi dalla Coldiretti regionale, che mette le Marche al terzo posto tra le regioni per numero di piante rispetto alla superficie. Per l’associazione degli agricoltori si tratta del beneficio della norma che prevede l’obbligo per i comuni sopra i 15.000 abitanti di mettere a dimora una nuova pianta per ogni bambino nato. Secondo un’analisi Coldiretti, sulla base dell’ultimo inventario nazionale del Corpo Forestale dello Stato, le Marche contano 518 milioni di alberi. Complessivamente, ci sono 308 mila ettari di superficie forestale, quasi un terzo di quella totale e oltre il doppio di quella registrata negli anni sessanta (140 mila ettari). La provincia con il maggior numero di boschi è quella di Pesaro-Urbino (121 mila ettari), davanti a Macerata (87 mila ettari), Ascoli Piceno e Fermo (69 mila ettari) e Ancona (31 mila ettari).

Italy has a reputation for high quality local crafts, but the country’s artigiani – traditional artisans – have struggled to compete with the increasing commercialisation of their country in recent years. Indeed The Guardian reported that Italian artisans were turning increasingly to the internet and the convenience of selling to supermarkets, in order to try and make a living. It seems that the traditional crafts of Italy are in danger of being lost to mass production, with the demise of uniqueness and quality that such a move usually entails.
However, my wife is determined to fight for the country’s artigiani. From our Italian base in Le Marche Dawn Cavanagh-Hobbs, a co-founder in our family-run company Appassionata, is supporting and working alongside local artisans. The individuals that Dawn works with are often the third or fourth generation of their family to carry out the specialist local crafts. Their workshops range from tiny warehouses to ramshackle wooden huts.
Dawn explains,“I feel privileged to have had the chance to meet and support so many talented artisans in Le Marche. Appassionata’s ethos is to support small local businesses and to help the region’s economy wherever possible. Many of the artisans we work with have tiny facilities at their disposal but what they produce is incredible.”

Monastero Di Fonte Avellana
Le sue origini risalgono alla fine del primo millennio e sono strettamente legate alla storia della congregazione dei Camaldolesi. L'eremo fu forse fondato da san Romualdo nel 980. Notevole impulso diede all'abbazia l'opera di san Pier Damiani, che qui divenne monaco nel 1035 e Priore dal 1043, non solo per l'ampliamento delle costruzioni originarie ma anche per un forte sviluppo culturale e spirituale che fece dell'eremo un punto riferimento religioso e sociale.La tradizione riporta il numero di 76 santi e beati vissuti nell'eremo. L'Eremo viene citato nella Divina Commedia (Paradiso, canto XXI) da Dante Alighieri, il quale sembra che ne sia stato anche ospite.
Santuario Beato Benedetto
Il Convento fu edificato nel XV secolo. Vi visse a lungo e vi morì Marco Passionei, che prese il nome di Frà Benedetto da Urbino. Attualmente è luogo di spiritualità sia per i pellegrinaggi alla tomba del Beato, sia per i ritiri religiosi che vi vengono organizzati. Il complesso conventuale e la Chiesa sono stati restaurati recentemente. Vi si conservano alcune opere d'arte di un certo pregio. Nella Cappella di sinistra sono custodite le reliquie del Beato Benedetto Passionei.
Santuario Della Madonna Del Pianto
Il Santuario della Madonna del Pianto si trova nella Basilica di S.Angelo in Vado, sorto per un voto fatto nel 1855, quando in città imperversava il colera. Fatto il voto iniziò la costruzione che durò quasi trent'anni: il Santuario fu inaugurato l'8 settembre 1885.

La festività dell'Incoronazione si tiene il 1 settembre . Apertura del Santuario ore 7-12 e 15-18. Il Santuario Madonna della Rosa si trova in via Madonna della Rosa, 18 60010 OSTRA Tel.071.68027 (diocesi di Senigallia). COME SI RAGGIUNGE In auto: autostrada A14 Ancona-Pesaro, uscita a Senigallia, poi SS360, a Pongelli deviazione per Ostra. In Treno: linea Ancona-Pesaro, stazione di Senigallia, poi pullman.
Santuario Della Santa Casa Di Loreto
Il Santuario della Santa Casa a Loreto, in provincia di Ancona, è un luogo sacro molto conosciuto, meta di numerosi pellegrini da tutto il mondo. Al suo interno, infatti, si trova la Santa Casa della Vergine, dove Maria ricevette l'Annunciazione.
Santuario Madonna Del Soccorso
Il Santuario sorge isolato su un altopiano tra il Monte Ercole e S.Agata sull'antico percorso della strada che da Sarsina per S.Agata portava a Perticara e Rimini. Anticamente nel luogo sorgeva una Celletta dedicata alla Vergine, ed era detta la località "Serra della Sconfitta", perché qui gli agatensi avrebbero, col soccorso della Vergine, ricacciato e sconfitto un esercito di invasori. Da qui anche il nome "Madonna del Soccorso".
Santuario Madonna Della Quercia
Il Convento dei Passionisti di Morrovalle sorge seminascosto tra il verde delel querce e degli ulivi, nella pace della collina marchigiana, nella vallata del Chienti. Fu un illustre cittadino di Morrovalle, Alessandro Collaterale, che verso il 1650 fece dipingere su tela l'immagine di Maria che, posta sul tronco di una quercia, sostiene amabilmente il Bambino Gesù.
Santuario Madonna Delle Grazie
La storia del santuario di S. Maria delle Grazie di Pesaro iniziò durante il dominio di Alessandro Sforza. Di fronte al mare, fra la Porta del Sale ela Porta Fanestra, nelle vicinanze della Rocca, c'era un'antica chiesa dedicata a S. Marco evangelista. In questa chiesa, già prima del 1478, era venerata un'immagine della Madonna dipinta su tavola, la "beata Vergine Maria delle Grazie di Pesaro".
Santuario Santa Maria A Mare
Antica e prodigiosa è la storia di S.Maria a Mare. Verso il 1100 esisteva già una Chiesa, fondata dagli Agostiniani, che fu devastata e più volte saccheggiata dai pirati che provenivano dall'Adriatico. Verso il 1400 fu trasformata e completata con l'edificazione del Convento. Il culto si diffuse però soprattutto nel 1630 quando, in seguito ad una terribile pestilenza, i fermani ricorsero alla protezione della Madonna, chiamata "Stella Maris".

When people think of palio competitions, they often think of the famous horse race for the Palio of Siena but many Italian towns hold palio contests. One of the more unusual races is the Palio della Rana, frog races, held in the town of Fermignano, between Urbino and Urbania in central Italy's Marche region. Participants, dressed in medieval costume, each push a cart (similar to a wheelbarrow) with the frog sitting atop a plank and try to reach the finish line before the frog hops off. As is common during palio competitions, there's also a historical procession before the races and food.

The Palio della Rana is usually held the weekend following Easter so this year it's the first weekend of April. Since it's been a very wet March, there should be plenty of frogs!

Uscire di casa per un appuntamento speciale, che coinvolge il cuore e la mente. “Invadere” per una volta le città e sentirsi parte di una collettività che si riconosce nella cultura del nostro Paese. Vivere l’esperienza di tante storie diverse che raccontano un’unica grande storia, la nostra, attraverso capolavori dell’arte, ambienti meravigliosi e luoghi apparentemente familiari eppure sorprendenti. È ciò che succede durante la XXI Giornata FAI di Primavera, in programma sabato 23 e domenica 24 marzo.
Quest’anno il FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano apre 700 luoghi in tutta Italia, spesso inaccessibili e per l’occasione eccezionalmente a disposizione del pubblico, con visite a contributo libero: chiese, palazzi, aree archeologiche, ville, borghi, giardini; persino caserme, centrali idroelettriche e un osservatorio astronomico.

[...] Pierino, has been renovating Palazzo Urbani since he first bought part of it in 1970. The palazzo at that time was partly abandoned and parly divided into small appartments. An elderly man, Domenico, lived in one of the appartments at the back. In the course of renovating, our friend found a postcard Domenico had written, but never sent. It was to Maria, his fiancè whom he had left behind when he went off to war. He spent the last part of the war in a German concentration camp and, for one reason or another, was not able to contact Maria. At the end of the war, he was released and returned home to Monte San Martino only to find that Maria had married someone else. Here is what he wrote on the postcard:
Maria, You will not know that in this valley of tears beats a heart in unison with yours. You will never know that there is a soul that searches for you in the infinity of dreams. I tell you again that I love you Maria and I will love you equally, in silence and in secret torture all my life. Domenico.

Domenico never married but lived a sad and solitary life in his litte appartment in Palazzo Urbani.
