Villa giardino Buonaccorsi: Now You Can Live Here!!! | Hideaway Le Marche | Scoop.it

Potenza Picena, in the heart of central Italy, in the province of Le Marche — one of the most peaceful, beautiful, and undisturbed regions on the peninsula, and perhaps the nation's best-kept secret — lies a hidden jewel: the nearly 6 hectare Renaissance estate known as Villa Buonaccorsi.
The exclusive property of the family of the Counts of the Buonaccorsi from 1582 until 1969, the walled estate, perched high on a hilltop surrounded by exquisite horizons and rolling green hills studded with walled towns and valleys sloping gently toward the nearby Adriatic coastline, has retained not only its original character but, perhaps as importantly, its full architectural and botanical splendor and function.
The 8,000 sq. m. five-tiered garden is one of the finest examples, stilt extant and fully functional, of the magnificentfy landscaped classic Italian garden, replete with greenhouse, statues, grottos, and unusual water displays. In the adjacent private woods, once used for bird-snaring, are rustic foot bridges over a stocked fish pond, charming clearings with stone benches for tete-a-tetes, and the thick, high-tree vegetation typical of the region.
The buildings on the property, from the graceful Villa to the stables, private chapel, servants' quarters, garages, workshops, and the garden's puppet theater and greenhouse comprise an outstanding example of the self-sufficiency of Italian country estate life.
The property, a small, autonomous village in itself, boasts an olive oil press, large kitchens with bakeries and ovens, granaries, warehouses, carpentry and other craft workshops, garages, and more. The private main road leading from a gate off the State highway to the villa extends as a service road around the inner circumference of the estate walls. All areas, levels and buildings are interconnected by a varied network of paths, stone steps, and secondary roads.

Musical chairs and mountain mishaps in the Apennines

Collamato, near beautiful Fabriano in the Marche, crowns a foothill of the Apennines. We went for my stepson’s wedding. In our apartment, attached to the castle walls, a lizard skidded frantically on tiles buckled by the recent earthquake. I helped the old ladies of the village prepare paninis for the reception in the village hall, where the Irish and English taught the Italians to play musical chairs. The language barrier was overcome by smiles and gestures.

We had a week of fun, visiting elegant Urbino one day, the dramatic limestone caves of Sassoferrato another, eating in hilltop restaurants and getting lost in the mountains.

Returning years later to stay with our daughter-in-law’s mother, we were welcomed as Padre di Tom and Mama Due, and plied with wine made from his own grapes by Honorio, the shopkeeper. The two breakages during musical chairs game had been forgiven.

Here the highlight about Le Marche:

"To the east bordering the Adriatic sits the region of Le Marche famed for its spicy fish stew, brodetto all’anconetana. But we skip its capital Ancona and head to the coastal town of Senigallia for two star Michelin treat Uliassi run by brother Mauro and sister Catia as chef and maître d’ respectively. Naturally a seafood inspired restaurant. Star dish from our dinner? A deep fried bread crust sandwiched with red mullet and dipped into a parsley anchovy soup.

Earlier in the day we pop into a stunning vineyard and winery, Cantina La Murola in Urbisaglia that unusually only produces single grape wines. My favourite from the wine tasting is Jole, a rose spumante using the charmat method similar to the PDO-protected prosecco. Sadly they do not yet export to Dubai.

Slow food artisan producers in Le MarcheThe following day we visit a trio of artisan producers that all embrace the Slow Food Movement’s principles – and all are open for public visits and shopping.

Trionfi Honorati in Jesi is a cheese maker selling over 20 buffalo (famed for its lower fat content) and cow milk cheeses from her farm (try the buffalo milk yoghurt); Sigi all-natural jams where I pick mulberries straight off the tree and into my mouth (jams are available at Heinz Beck’s Taste of Italy in Dubai; and cured pork heaven at Salumi Monterotti in Sarnano with a selection of hams, salamis including a PGI (protected geographical indication) delicious buttery ‘ciauscolo’, porchetta and matured pork loin."

It is the first time that we participated in the NYIOOC and we are so glad about this award and prestige that it give us at the international level, since in the last two years we are on the US market,” said Alfredo Agostini who won a Gold Award with Sublimis, that comes from an olive grove at 350 meters above sea level in the Marche region. “During the 2014 harvest, we had a 50 percent drop in quantity. This year we performed natural preventive treatments with copper for the conventional production since we prefer to avoid chemical products. But the olives were so healthy that no additional treatments were needed and this has given great results.”

Secret Italy: finding perfection in Le Marche | Hideaway Le Marche | Scoop.it
The title of the Italian province of Le Marche literally means “the borderlands”, a neutral region neighbouring more important places. This makes a lot of sense when you consider that Tuscany lies to the north and Umbria to the south. Next to these titans of the tourist trade so beloved of the inglese, and hemmed in by the mountains and the sea on either side, you might call Le Marche something of a poor relation, rarely visited.
