Interactive Storytelling and Coding

Interactive Storytelling and Coding | Arquitecturas digitales del aprendizaje para una educación 3.0 | Scoop.it
Knowing that coding is an important skill for students to learn, I knew I had to come up with ways to teach coding skills. However, I knew nothing about coding, so I needed to learn a few basics. With my new found knowledge, I came up with so many fun ideas for integrating coding into my literacy lessons. Which is why I am so happy I get to share one of the first ever coding lessons I incorporated into the literacy curriculum AND it is just in time for the Mentor Text Lessons to Warm Up Your Winter Link-Up using the book Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

Via John Evans, Chris Carter, Bonnie Bracey Sutton
Oskar Almazan's insight:
when coding came on the scene, I wasn’t sure how I could incorporate it into the literacy standards. Fortunately, I learned about interactive storytelling and coding using Scratch Jr., but there isn’t a lot of ideas or products to help me implement interactive storytelling with ease.

Have Students Create Educational "Motivational Posters" with Google Drawings | Arquitecturas digitales del aprendizaje para una educación 3.0 | Scoop.it
Students can use Google Drawings to create educational motivational posters to explain vocab terms, concepts, people, events, and more.
Oskar Almazan's insight:
We are all familiar with motivational posters. They typically have a black background, one large image at the top, then a word or short phrase in large type below it, and finally a short inspirational sentence at the bottom. These motivational posters have been around for decades, and most likely can still be found in the classrooms, libraries, and offices of your schools. However, beyond just providing some encouragement to students, motivational posters can actually be used as a fun and educational activity. With some simple technology tools, students can create and share their own motivational posters. These creations can be used to show students learning and understanding of any concept being taught in your subject.

“I was chatting with this robot BradTron yesterday, and it told me the funniest joke…” There’s a turn of phrase you’re probably not used to hearing. The robot part isn’t surprising– Roombas have been keeping our home’s tidy since 2002–  but a robot being funny? With advancements in artificial intelligence, chatbots, and other AI taking heed in the business world, this turn of phrase may soon become a staple among online consumers.

Oskar Almazan's insight:
Last year, I talked about chatbots and their innovate yet slow-moving progress in the “intelligence” department, turning up frustration more often than not when used for customer service and marketing. 2017, however, is a different story: Gartner has predicted chatbots to be one of the biggest players in AI in 2017, along with tons of other artificial intelligence use cases for marketing that are sure to pick up steam throughout the year. Here’s what to expect from AI for business in 2017, and how your small business can get in on the action.

Digital citizenship Web resources come in many shapes and sizes, and this list of 18 includes some of the best ones out there.

Via Tom D'Amico (@TDOttawa)
Oskar Almazan's insight:
There are many reputable and respectable organizations whose life’s work is to develop digital citizenship resources to instill its values in educators and students worldwide. We at the Global Digital Citizen Foundation are proud to be among them. We like to use 6 guidelines for practicing digital citizenship: Respect for self: Having respect for yourself is about being aware of how you portray yourself with your online persona. In doing so, you will set a positive example for others to follow. Responsibility for self: We must be mindful to avoid behavior that puts us at risk, both online and offline. Acting responsibly encourages exemplary personal governance as a habit of mind and adds to our sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Respect for others: Respecting others teaches us the value of being constructive and friendly online. It’s about modeling behavior that focuses on civility and constructive thinking in the face of conflict. Responsibility for others: Don’t be afraid to report abusive and inappropriate behavior towards others. This is how we come to see the value in making others feel protected and valued themselves. Respect for property: Asking permission to share another’s intellectual properties is an important practice. Those who devote their time to creativity in the service of others deserve no less. Learn the rules of “fair use” and copyright laws, and how they apply to sourcing and using online information. Responsibility for property: Treating our property and others’ with care and respect, including intellectual properties, is vital to preserving our digital and global communities. Remember that any kind of digital piracy is still theft and is not a victimless crime. Make a choice to act with integrity and to value what we use or own.

Augmented reality–a technology that uses a trigger image to superimpose digital content over a user’s view of the real world–is growing in popularity and accessibility, and it holds a wealth of potential for education. Often described as “QR codes on steroids,” the technology offers new and exciting ways for students to interact with lessons, said Jeff Peterson, an instructional technologist in the Lamar Consolidated ISD in Texas. Peterson presented a TCEA 2017 session on augmented reality’s application in classrooms. Augmented reality-based apps infuse more engagement into learning exercises, and students often grasp complex concepts quickly with interactive content, said Peterson, referencing Drew Minock, an advocate for augmented reality in the classroom and outreach manager at augmented reality company Daqri.

(They need to have an internet access to download the course and then they can view it with/without the internet connection. However, to track their progress through the LMS, they must be connected to the internet as only then can their progress information be passed on to the LMS). mLearning effectively blends the “anytime-anywhere access” to varied forms of learning delivery. The options available on mobile devices today include formal training, supplements to formal training and specific Performance Support Tools (PSTs).
