Confronting racism face-to-face

Confronting racism face-to-face | Herstory | Scoop.it

Mo Asumang is the daughter of a black Ghanaian father and a white German mother.

As a well-known TV presenter in Germany she became the target of racist extreme right-wingers and neo-Nazis, who based their attacks on Asumang's "non-Aryan" background.

So she decided to look into the racist ideology and to find out more about those who consider themselves "Aryan".

In her new documentary, The Aryans, she confronts racists, both in Germany and among the Ku Klux Klan in America.

Mo Asumang spoke to BBC News about her experiences making the film.

How Iron Man 3 Flipped the Script on Female Characters | Underwire | WIRED

How Iron Man 3 Flipped the Script on Female Characters | Underwire | WIRED | Herstory | Scoop.it
Want to see one of the most progressive portrayals of women in a blockbuster movie this year? Then go see Iron Man 3. As incongruous as it sounds, it’s true: director Shane Black and his co-writer, Drew Pearce, managed to turn female characters into the stealth stars of a superhero film about an arrogant billionaire (former) playboy by flipping the script on stereotypes about female characters and making them interesting, mature people who actually do things.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

However, read this quote from the article as well:

"Ultimately, what Iron Man 3 does isn’t revolutionary; or at least, it shouldn’t be. The truly surprising thing should be how surprising it feels to have two smart women (more than one!) talking to each other in a movie about something other than a man. It’s something that women experience every single day of their lives, and its comparative rarity in our entertainment should make us feel a constant sense of incongruity–like something is missing."

Interview with Screenwriter, Director, Mary Harron

Interview with Screenwriter, Director, Mary Harron | Herstory | Scoop.it

A 2013 study conducted by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism shows that in the last decade there has been no sustained increase in female directors of independent films shown at the Sundance Film Festival. In Hollywood, it’s worse: of directors of the top box-office films from 2002 to 2012, only 4.4 percent were female. Amid those dismal statistics, director Mary Harron’s perseverance in the industry is an inspiration for female filmmakers, and she is an example of how to endure an artistic life packed with both praise and controversy.
