Usa: Workplace pregnancy discrimination cases on the rise | Herstory | Scoop.it

Hundreds of women, many in low-paying jobs, see their paychecks disappear right after they tell their bosses of their pregnancies. Their stories recently were highlighted at an EEOC hearing on pregnancy discrimination. Nationwide in fiscal 2011, women filed 5,797 complaints with the EEOC alleging pregnancy discrimination at work or in hiring, a 23 percent increase from fiscal 2005.

National Women's History Museum Makes Little Progress After 16 Years

National Women's History Museum Makes Little Progress After 16 Years | Herstory | Scoop.it

by ANDREA STONE and

CHRISTINA WILKIE,

huffingtonpost.com

Sixteen years ago, a small band of women working on Capitol Hill launched a campaign to "Free the Sisters of the Crypt" and raised $85,000 in modest, private donations to move an unfinished, 10-ton marble statue of suffrage pioneers from the basement of the U.S. Capitol to the Rotunda.

That one achievement has since grown into a movement to build a national museum in Washington honoring women's contributions to American history. Big-name sponsors, including actress Meryl Streep, have pledged their support, and the museum's organizers have raised nearly $10 million.

Yet 16 years after organizers began in 1996, there is still no National Women's History Museum (NWHM). Its leaders have failed to secure -- or even identify -- a location for a building, and sometimes have downplayed the very idea that they need one.

Political landmark for Nancy Pelosi: She marks 25 years in elected politics this week

Political landmark for Nancy Pelosi: She marks 25 years in elected politics this week | Herstory | Scoop.it

SFGate.com blog

It was 25 years ago this week — April 7, 1987 to be exact — that a mother of five named Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi won the first of what would be a very long string of election victories, a critical marker on the road to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Pelosi’s long march in politics, culminating in her becoming the Speaker of the House, began when she was the victor in that 1987 bare knuckles special election battle to be the Democratic nominee in what was then California’s Fifth Congressional district.

Gender Revolution Symposium Keynote | Gender & Sexuality | Herstory | Scoop.it
When we first started writing about this subject, we wondered whether what we were observing was real, whether it was significant, and whether it was a permanent shift or temporary setback. Today we still have the same questions - but are more confident that it is real and more certain that it matters. We do not know whether there will be renewed progress in the near future, but at this point it is clear that although the gender revolution has not been reversed, it is stalled on several fronts - and there is still a long way to go.

Controversial Voter ID Measure Moves Ahead

Controversial Voter ID Measure Moves Ahead | Herstory | Scoop.it

by DAVID BAILEY, Reuters

A controversial voter photo ID requirement will be on the ballot in Minnesota in November after the Republican-led legislature gave its approval on Wednesday.

The legislature's move bypasses Democratic Governor Mark Dayton - who vetoed a voter ID bill last year - and puts the proposed amendment to the state's constitution directly in the hands of voters.

The ACLU of Minnesota civil liberties group and the League of Women Voters of Minnesota have opposed the amendment and executive directors of both organizations said Wednesday they were considering several options including potential legal challenges.

"This is just voter suppression, they dress it up in a pretty gown and put lipstick on it, but it is voter suppression," said Charles Samuelson, executive director of the ACLU of Minnesota.  [MORE]
