Minnesota House and Senate Pass New Rules On Telemed Abortions and Clinic Licensing

Minnesota House and Senate Pass New Rules On Telemed Abortions and Clinic Licensing | Herstory | Scoop.it

by ROBIN MARTY, RH Reality Check

Minnesota Republicans are jumping on the anti-choice bandwagon and have passed two new bills designed to add more burdensome regulation on abortion providers.

The Republican dominated House voted overwhelmingly to make it a felony to dispense RU-486 without a doctor in the room, and that the doctor must be present when it is ingested as well.

The new regulations on RU-486 are in reaction to a new clinic in Rochester that was providing "telemed" abortions to other clinics in more remote areas of the state that did not have available abortion providers. If the bill becomes law, the felony charges would cut off most rural women from being able to obtain an abortion without being forced to travel to one of the large metro areas to find a provider.

What We Can Learn From Teen Dating Violence

What We Can Learn From Teen Dating Violence | Herstory | Scoop.it

"the data in this survey reveals that the prevalence of domestic violence, especially when combined with gender-skewed safety education, means that such violence prevails because we are too busy providing reasons such as “it’s a tough economy” that “explain” violence rather than flat out condemn it." National Women's History Museum Makes Little Progress After 16 Years

National Women's History Museum Makes Little Progress After 16 Years | Herstory | Scoop.it

by ANDREA STONE and

CHRISTINA WILKIE,

huffingtonpost.com

Sixteen years ago, a small band of women working on Capitol Hill launched a campaign to "Free the Sisters of the Crypt" and raised $85,000 in modest, private donations to move an unfinished, 10-ton marble statue of suffrage pioneers from the basement of the U.S. Capitol to the Rotunda.

That one achievement has since grown into a movement to build a national museum in Washington honoring women's contributions to American history. Big-name sponsors, including actress Meryl Streep, have pledged their support, and the museum's organizers have raised nearly $10 million.

Yet 16 years after organizers began in 1996, there is still no National Women's History Museum (NWHM). Its leaders have failed to secure -- or even identify -- a location for a building, and sometimes have downplayed the very idea that they need one.

New Study Links Traditional Marriage to War on Women

New Study Links Traditional Marriage to War on Women | Herstory | Scoop.it

by JASON STANFORD, huffintonpost.com

When Gallup came out with a new poll showing the president opening up an 18-point lead with women, pundits blamed the war on women. But according to a new study, Republicans might have someone entirely different to blame: Ann Romney.

In fact, the academic study that helps explain the country's gender gap has nothing specifically to do with Ann Romney, but rather the fact that she doesn't work outside the home. A recent study by Sreedhari Desai, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, found that men in traditional marriages with stay-at-home wives had negative attitudes about working women and organizations led by women, and they were more likely to deny opportunities to women. [MORE]

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Universal Declaration of Human Rights | Herstory | Scoop.it

 Wikipedia

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (10 December 1948 at Palais de Chaillot, Paris). The Declaration arose directly from the experience of the Second World War and represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. It consists of 30 articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions and laws. The International Bill of Human Rights consists of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its two Optional Protocols. In 1966 the General Assembly adopted the two detailed Covenants, which complete the International Bill of Human Rights; and in 1976, after the Covenants had been ratified by a sufficient number of individual nations, the Bill took on the force of international law. [MORE]

“OUR GOD IS WOMAN, OUR MISSION IS PROTEST, OUR WEAPONS ARE BARE BREASTS!” – FEMEN

Ukraine’s depressed economy and ease of entry into the country have fuelled the rise of sex tourism in recent years. There are approximately twelve thousand prostitutes in Ukraine and in the capital, Kiev, it is estimated that up to sixty percent of the total number of sex workers are university students. Femen, a Kiev-based women’s rights organization, was formed in 2008 in an effort to fight against prostitution and the growing sex tourism industry. Femen now protests on a range of issues: from women’s rights in the Middle East to Internet censorship. The group consists mostly of young, female university students, and much of the media attention surrounding Femen has focused on the fact that its members protest topless. Threats from the Ukrainian Secret Services, multiple arrests, Facebook censorship, and a lack of money, have failed to deter Femen from staging their almost weekly protests. Sitting in Café Cupid, the basement bar that Femen uses as their headquarters, Inna Shevchenko, one of the key members of the group, chatted to us about what it’s like to be a member of Femen and the future of the organisation.
