George Bernard Shaw's Politics Of Gender Still Apply Today

George Bernard Shaw's Politics Of Gender Still Apply Today | Herstory | Scoop.it

The very real economic component of gender disparity, of how male privilege affects women, continues to be heard in serious talks about modern sex work and feminism today. The issue of censorship limiting discussions of the same — as well as discussions and depictions of truth, sexuality, and other taboos — also continues.

Judith van Praag's curator insight, November 17, 2:05 PM

A Podcast on Tablet Magazine about Jonathan Eig's book, "The Birth of the Pill: How Four Crusaders Reinvented Sex and Launched a Revolution" was enlightening.
Here I'd been thinking it was my friend Harry's father Max de Winter (1920-2012) who created "De Pil", to discover the Americans were just a bit ahead of the Netherlands.
De Winter survived Auschwitz thanks to his technical skills in a Siemens factory. Post WWII he worked as scientist for pharmaceutical company Organon in Oss, NL.

After Syntex produced The Pill in the U.S., approved by the FDA in 1957 to treat menstrual disorders, and in 1960 as contraceptive, we Dutch got our own Lyndion® in 1962 thanks to the Winter and his team. My "Dolle Mina" (feminist) mother took pride in getting De Pil covered by health insurance, just in time for her daughter to benefit.

Photography meets feminism: Australian women photographers 1970s–80s

Photography meets feminism: Australian women photographers 1970s–80s | Herstory | Scoop.it

Robyn Stacey, Untitled, 1981

During this period of the late twentieth century, photography helped feminism and feminism helped photography. On the one hand, feminists used the highly informative and accessible medium of photography to raise awareness of critical social issues. On the other hand, photographic artists embraced feminist themes as a way of making their practice less esoteric and more engaged with contemporary life. This productive exchange between feminism and photography fostered a range of technical innovations and critical frameworks that radically transformed the direction of visual culture in Australia.
