Mormon feminist excommunicated

Mormon feminist excommunicated | Herstory | Scoop.it

By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

(CNN) –
Kate Kelly, a lifelong Mormon who’s spearheaded a fight for equal opportunities for women in her church, was convicted of apostasy Monday and excommunicated from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The verdict, decided by a panel of male judges who convened Sunday, came to her by way of an e-mail sent by her former LDS Church bishop in Virginia, Mark Harrison. Kelly described the verdict as “exceptionally painful.”

Remember when Mormons would not allow Black people to become priests?

This church has serious issues.

"When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know, the end result is tyranny and oppression no matter how holy the motives."

It’s a woman’s world at Bozar’s Summer of Photography | Flanders Today

It’s a woman’s world at Bozar’s Summer of Photography | Flanders Today | Herstory | Scoop.it

For women, photography was different, says Gabriele Schor, the Austrian curator of Bozar’s new exhibition, WOMAN: The Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s, which stands as the centrepiece of the fifth biennial Summer of Photography festival in Brussels.

According to Schor, when women took up photography and other new media in the 1960s and ’70s, it was an act of artistic emancipation. “For the first time in the history of art, the ‘image of women’ was being created by women,” she says.

WOMAN, a collection of 450 works – mostly photographs – by 29 European and American female artists of the 1970s, sets the tone for this year’s festival, which takes a penetrating look into the world of gender and how it is performed and experienced in different societies.

Spearheaded by Bozar and in collaboration with 36 partners, Summer of Photography spreads across 20 locations in the Brussels-Capital Region, representing more than 85 artists.

Until 31 August 2014.

When Evangelicalism Makes Things Easy For Sexual Offenders – and Hard for Their Victims

When Evangelicalism Makes Things Easy For Sexual Offenders – and Hard for Their Victims | Herstory | Scoop.it
by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy Feminism

Evangelical teachings on repentance and forgiveness create a tremendous problem when it comes to rape or other forms of abuse. If you commit a sin and repent of it, God forgives you. I remember hearing Psalm 103:12 quoted constantly: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Of course, this was always said in a positive way—isn’t it awesome that God forgives us no matter what? But it doesn’t must mean God forgives us. It also means God forgives rapists, child molesters, and so on—fully and completely.

Helle Nice: The forgotten story | Herstory | Scoop.it

Paris 1984: The old lady made her painful way up the stairs to her tiny, squalid apartment. Although it was the summer, she was cold; she was always cold.

She doubted that she had long for this world, she’d been born with the century.

Everything she owned, mostly mementoes from the past, was kept in a battered tin trunk. She lived on charity now but once she had been wealthy and the most famous woman in France. Now, no-one knew her name.

Oh, the parties she’d attended. The acclaim...

Let's just spell it out right at the start: Kola Boof is one of the great migrant writers of our time. Her Selected Writings, If My Father Dies I Give Birth to Him Again (edited by Mark Fogarty), underlines the Egyptian-Sudanese-American writer's literary achievements over a wide range of forms as diverse as poetry, memoir, and fiction, (both long and short form) and over a wide range of physical and emotional territory extending from her native Sudan to America, back to Africa, and then back to America again.

Even when her words sting. For behind them, truth rings. I'd like to think there are others out there who can be taught daily, and not just from some 'word a day' calendar.
