Hurricanes with women's names significantly more deadly: study | Herstory | Scoop.it

Bertha, Dolly, Fay and Hanna could be on the way now that the Atlantic hurricane season started Sunday. And recent research suggests it’s time to give the storms with feminine names a bit more respect.

...According to a recent study by University of Illinois researchers, hurricanes with women’s names are likely to cause significantly more deaths than those with masculine names -- not because the feminine-named storms are stronger, but because they are perceived as less threatening and so people are less prepared.

Women And Girls Don't Need To Be Told To Be Nicer

Women And Girls Don't Need To Be Told To Be Nicer | Herstory | Scoop.it

The trouble is that, for women, being "nice" often translates into putting up with things we should never put up with. How many times has some creep sat uncomfortably close to me on the bus and stared me down, yet I’m too afraid to just get up and move, lest I offend him?

Laura Brown's comment, September 17, 2013 9:07 PM
In this case, I think the shirt is more about not having sex than being nice. I do agree with what you wrote about being nice. We do seem to think being nice and being a doormat are the same thing. I try not to fall into that and only be as nice as I feel I want to be. Nice is about being polite, not taking abuse.

Domestic Violence Is Not a "Nuisance"

Domestic Violence Is Not a "Nuisance" | Herstory | Scoop.it

Lakisha Briggs was nearly evicted from her home for involving the police one too many times when her boyfriend tried to beat her.

That’s because cities and towns nationwide are passing "nuisance ordinances." These measures force landlords to evict tenants who are involved in disorderly behavior – even if they are victims of domestic violence.

No one should face homelessness for calling the cops to stop domestic violence! Sign our open letter calling for the repeal of nuisance ordinances so that women like Lakisha aren’t punished for calling the police.

What about Rob Portman’s daughter? Why Republicans' new empathy on gays and immigration won't extend to reproductive rights

What about Rob Portman’s daughter? Why Republicans' new empathy on gays and immigration won't extend to reproductive rights | Herstory | Scoop.it

Abortion and access to contraception often get lumped with marriage equality as “social issues,” but there are reasons why they’ve played out differently. Take Portman’s own reasoning in his Op-Ed this morning: “We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives. We also consider the family unit to be the fundamental building block of society. We should encourage people to make long-term commitments to each other and build families, so as to foster strong, stable communities and promote personal responsibility.” In other words, gay and lesbian people are joining what Portman considers to be, and has historically been, a conservative institution — much like the military, where they’d already been serving in secret.

Although family planning used to be considered a conservative issue, there is still something more radical and terrifying about a woman not wanting to be a mother, or wanting to be a mother on her own terms. There will always be people who consider it the same as murder of a fully developed person in the world. There is still far more empathy for an embryo or fetus than for the living woman.

Facing Protective Orders and Allowed to Keep Guns

Facing Protective Orders and Allowed to Keep Guns | Herstory | Scoop.it

The National Rifle Association and its allies are challenging states’ efforts to take guns away from domestic violence offenders who have been served with civil protection orders.

...

For all its rage and terror, the episode might well have been prevented. Had Mr. Holten lived in one of a handful of states, the protection order would have forced him to relinquish his firearms. But that is not the case in Washington and most of the country, in large part because of the influence of the National Rifle Association and its allies.

Advocates for domestic violence victims have long called for stricter laws governing firearms and protective orders. Their argument is rooted in a grim statistic: when women die at the hand of an intimate partner, that hand is more often than not holding a gun.

In these most volatile of human dramas, they contend, the right to bear arms must give ground to the need to protect a woman’s life.

Penile Code Avenger: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Let's Talk About Domestic Violence | Herstory | Scoop.it

47,000 Women Die Each Year From Unsafe Abortions

47,000 Women Die Each Year From Unsafe Abortions | Herstory | Scoop.it

by TARA CULP-RESSLER, ThinkProgress

According to the Guttmacher Institute, complications from unsafe abortions in the developing world contribute to 47,000 preventable deaths each year.

In all parts of the world, women have abortions for similar reasons, often for the very same reasons that woman who have access to modern contraception choose to use birth control. Women want to be able to delay having children if they are financially unable to care for a child or additional children, if they are not in a stable relationship with a partner who can help them care for a child, or if they still need to finish their education. But contraception isn’t readily available in many of the countries where women are dying from botched abortion procedures. Guttmacher estimates that about 222 million women in the developing world are trying to avoid pregnancy, but aren’t using a modern form of contraception, putting themselves at risk for an unintended pregnancy and an unsafe abortion.
