Chart of the Day: Women write about family and gender, men cover literally everything else | Herstory | Scoop.it

"When we talk about gender imbalance in the media, it’s not just about women being generally underrepresented compared to men–it’s also about what topics they’re covering. Are women’s voices present in the media conversations around the full range of important issue areas of the day, or are they still siloed into certain traditionally feminine spheres? Welp, take a look at today’s depressing chart brought to you by Foreign Policy using data from The Op-Ed Project."

What's up with the way that the media portrays menstruation? If all you knew about periods came from what you see on TV and in magazines, you'd think they're either hilarious or terrifying. Watch Kat Lazo in this video where she discusses why this misrepresentation is dangerous for us if it causes embarrassment and uneasiness to the point of wanting to hide menstruation.

The Standard Hotels, DuJour Media, and Violence Against Women

The Standard Hotels, DuJour Media, and Violence Against Women | Herstory | Scoop.it

DuJour is a new fashion/lifestyle magazine published nationally with localized issues for major cities. The Standard is a “boutique” hotel chain with locations in New York, Miami, and L.A. The image above looks to be taken from the NYC edition (based on the small print on the facing page). Somewhere in the offices where each of these companies does business, one assumes that entire teams of people looked at this and thought it was ok. At an ad agency hired by The Standard, some bright young creative type came up with this ad* in response to the challenge to market a hotel chain to rich people, a group that must certainly include many, many women. All three of these companies made the decision to use violence against women to market a product. Apparently, this isn’t the first time The Standard has been criticized for their advertising choices. Claire Darrow, creative director for Andre Balazs Properties has said these choices amount to “surrendering our ads to art, so to speak…We want to contribute to the magazines…We don’t just want to advertise.” (Update for clarity: This piece is part of a series by Erwin Wurm called “One Minute Sculptures”)

My first thought was that her other arm is missing, her head may be under the suitcase. Either way, how does that advertise the hotel? Don't they have staff who would have offered to help her? Whatever the situation, heavy luggage, violence, illness... why would a hotel advertise by showing a woman down on the ground? I think that is more the point for me.
Gracie Passette's comment, August 30, 2013 12:32 AM
How can anyone see anything positive about this image? Hurt, wounded, murdered, whatever ~ "immobility" is counter to "travel", isn't it?

Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage (petition).

Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage (petition). | Herstory | Scoop.it

Yesterday a guilty verdict was handed down in the Steubenville rape case, where a 16-year-old girl was raped repeatedly by boys on a high school football team. The verdict was the beginning of justice for this brave young girl, but CNN's coverage was awful.

The entire CNN panel, including Candy Crowley, reporter Poppy Harlow and legal analyst Paul Callan focused on what a tragedy this was for the boys and what a shame it was that their lives had been ruined--as if the rape was some sort of unfortunate accident and they hadn't committed a very serious, very invasive and very life-altering for the survivor, crime.

CNN didn't focus on what this verdict meant for Jane Doe--only sad reflections on the "destroyed" lives of these boys--boys who were caught on tape raping a girl. This is wrong and CNN owes us all an apology. Can you add your name to the petition?

Body Image In Art, Porn & Media - Sex~Kitten.net

Body Image In Art, Porn & Media - Sex~Kitten.net | Herstory | Scoop.it

Much is written on the effects of porn and female body image. Some complain fearfully of men who will, upon viewing porn, expect all women to have those bodies; others that women themselves fall into this trap and try to emulate such unrealistic things with their own bodies. Of course, these accusations and reservations aren't only reserved for pornographic materials, but magazines, television, any media.

And while you may think that I'm going to rant about how stupid this is, how silly it is to believe that people will be so affected by these images that they'd let ~ no force ~ them to be their realities, I'm not.

FCC asks Supreme Court to uphold fine for Super Bowl 'wardrobe malfunction' - The Hill's Hillicon Valley | Herstory | Scoop.it

Are we really still talking about this?  I know some folks are outraged about seeing breasts, but really, they are just mammary glands that feed babies.  (And some people like to look at for other reasons.)  The "malfunction" lasted less than one second EIGHT YEARS AGO.

Message to FCC...we have more important issues to deal with today.  My priority, would be requiring disclaimers between NEWS and OPINION, FACT and FICTION (aka I made this up). Confusion created by broadcasters is causing much more damage to our country than a woman's breast seen 8 years ago and endlessly available on the internet today.

Rant over.
