Who Farts? And Who Cares?

Who Farts? And Who Cares? | Herstory | Scoop.it

Sociologists Martin Weinberg and Colin Williams wanted to know. They and their team interviewed 172 college students about their habits and concerns about farting and pooping. They published their results in an article called Fecal Matters. They discovered that everybody farts and everybody cares, but not everyone cares all the time or equally.

They separated their results by gender and sexual orientation. When they asked people if they were worried that the hearer would “feel disgust,” heterosexual women were most likely to agree and heterosexual men the least, with non-heterosexual men and women in the middle, but flipped such that men were more worried than women.

@Laura Brown I can't agree with you. Wearing shirts about guns & violent threats isn't the answer to rape culture. In fact, this stinks more of rape culture than anything. It's about a man's property; not respect or a woman's value.
Laura Brown's comment, January 21, 6:23 PM
I'm reading it as more bluster or humour based. But the tone of protecting daughters is still important. People don't protect something or someone they don't value.
Laura Brown's comment, January 21, 6:25 PM
Maybe it's a Canada/ US difference too. Not many people here actually have a gun to wave around. So here a shirt like that would not be seen as serious versus humour or propaganda.

Wouldn’t A Wife Be Great!?

Wouldn’t A Wife Be Great!? | Herstory | Scoop.it

Heather L. sent us a link to a business called The Occasional Wife. It’s slogan: “The Modern Solution To Your Busy Life.” The store sells products that help you organize your home and office, and provides all kinds of helpful services to support your personal goals.

There are two things worth noting here:

First, the business relies on and reproduces the very idea of “wife.”  As the website makes clear, wives are people who (a) make your life more pleasurable by taking care of details and daily life-maintenance (such as running errands), (b) organize special events in your life (such as holidays), and (c) deal with work-intensive home-related burdens (such as moving), all while perfectly coiffed and in high heels.

But, the business only makes sense in a world where “real” wives are obsolete.  Prior to industrialization, most men and women worked together on home farms.  With industrialization, all but the wealthiest of families relied on (at least) two breadwinners. In the 1950s, the era to which this business implicitly harkens, Americans were bombarded with ideological propaganda praising stay-at-home wives and mothers (in part to pressure women out of jobs that “belonged” to men after the war).  Since then, women have increasingly participated in wage labor.  Today, the two parent, single-earner family is only

Photo of the Day: “Women: Like men, only cheaper.” | Herstory | Scoop.it

his “Women: Like men, only cheaper” image should look familiar–we’ve sarcastically used to“celebrate” Equal Pay Day in the past. But an Australian tech executive was all-too-serious when he included it as a slide during his talk at a tech conference recently. Evan Thornleye explained how “forward-thinking” people such as himself can take advantage of the wage gap by hiring qualified women “for relatively cheap.”
