Presiding Ladies of the White House

Presiding Ladies of the White House | Herstory | Scoop.it

we present images not of Washington and Lincoln, or even of any of the presidents, but rather the Presiding Ladies of the White House, a biographical album by Lila G. A. Woolfall, with an introduction by noted author and editor Margaret Elizabeth Sangster, published in 1903 by the Bureau of National Literature and Art in Washington, DC. We decided to focus on women related to presidents who aren’t so commonly discussed. It’s a bit surprising today some of the details Woolfall felt important to include, but overall, it’s a pleasurable and informative read.. From top to bottom, they are:

Villes Thermales - EHTTA - Thermal Towns: Anna de Noailles in Evian-les-Bains

Villes Thermales - EHTTA - Thermal Towns: Anna de Noailles in Evian-les-Bains | Herstory | Scoop.it

In a villa on the shores of Lake Geneva, the memory of a Romanian countess brings back to life the time when Evian-les-Bains used to welcome the literature world.

By her own admission, Anna de Noailles spent a lot of time telling her life story day after day, and receiving the artists she admired and who genuinely worshipped her. But it was only very late on that she gave up writing on the moment and tell of a thrilling existence defined by shared moments, representations of the world and flashes of literature in 'Livre de ma vie' (Book of my life)*.

In it, she fondly looks back on the instant success of her first poetry collection 'Le coeur innombrable', in 1901, when she was only 25 years old. In it, she mentions the extravagance of Robert de Montesquiou, who had her texts read by the great Sarah Bernhardt.

Let's just spell it out right at the start: Kola Boof is one of the great migrant writers of our time. Her Selected Writings, If My Father Dies I Give Birth to Him Again (edited by Mark Fogarty), underlines the Egyptian-Sudanese-American writer's literary achievements over a wide range of forms as diverse as poetry, memoir, and fiction, (both long and short form) and over a wide range of physical and emotional territory extending from her native Sudan to America, back to Africa, and then back to America again.
