American Revolutionary: Grace Lee Boggs

American Revolutionary: Grace Lee Boggs | Herstory | Scoop.it

Grace Lee Boggs, 99, is a Chinese American philosopher, writer, and activist in Detroit with a thick FBI file and a surprising vision of what an American revolution can be. Rooted for 75 years in the labor, civil rights and Black Power movements, she challenges a new generation to throw off old assumptions, think creatively and redefine revolution for our times.

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans | Herstory | Scoop.it

In May of this year, I talked to Deon Haywood, Executive Director of Women With A Vision in New Orleans about her approach to organizing. WWAV scored a significant grassroots legal and political victory in the last year with the NO Justice campaign, which removed hundreds of cis and trans women from Louisiana’s registered felony sexual offender rolls. Deon is a longtime activist in the city of New Orleans, with a history of organizing low-income women of color around reproductive justice, harm reduction, and human rights.

...We are not all in the same boat. And if we keep playing like we are, we’re not really going to make the kind of change we’d like to see. Because the women I work with are never going to be able to jump into the sex workers’ rights movement. They don’t feel like that movement is for them.

Hypocrisy, Hate and Harm #no2h8splc | Herstory | Scoop.it

[This] is what happened when a bunch of RadFems righteously took over the offices of the Ladie’s Home Journal because it was a vector for promoting false stereotypes about women. Protesting negative stereotypes of cisgender women in the media has a long and proud tradition among feminists.

May Day Rising!

May Day Rising! | Herstory | Scoop.it

by LAURA KACERE, feministcampusblog.org

The fight on May Day is a fight for economic justice; it is a fight for a better world.

When I was a kid, May 1st meant giving and receiving May Day baskets from my friends. Today it just means I have to pay my rent.

But for the world, May 1st signifies a beautiful fight – one that has for over a century stood for the rights of workers and an end to their exploitation.

Wear All White for Women's Rights

Wear All White for Women's Rights | Herstory | Scoop.it

Facebook

Based on the Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee’s nonviolent protest for women’s rights in Liberia , I started this protest as a single woman in New York, a woman who is horrified at watching my rights being stripped away in this country that I love so much. I can no longer sit back and do nothing. I am beginning this grass roots movement to stand up for my rights, your rights, human rights. Will you stand with me?

Lawmakers today seem to have forgotten who those laws are being made for; seem to have forgotten how many of us there are who vote to keep them in office, or to take them out. How about a friendly reminder?

I stand by and for women’s rights.

By wearing all white, or a white shirt with pink "I support women's rights" on this day, April 2, 2012, I am reminding those who write and pass bills:

that women deserve honesty from their doctors - 100% of the time that a fetus’s life is not more important that the mother's that state sanctioned rape is still rape and not ok that it is not ok to charge a mother with attempted murder for a miscarriage that it is not ok to force women to carry a stillborn baby to term that it is not ok to take away the funding of women to receive medical treatment to make a political point that it is not ok to fire a woman because she is taking a medicine you disagree with

For these and many other things currently being debated about in legislature, I stand by and for women’s rights.

Leymah Gbowee said “It’s time for women to stop being politely angry.”

Here is a way to start:

Commit to wearing all white on Monday April 2. Send this invite to people you know. Find a way to gather with others who are weraing white, the more people in one place, the greater the impact. Call your senators and congressmen and let them know you do not approve of what’s happening right now. Stay informed. Talk about it. Shout about it. Do not stop until they have listened. Start visual protests of your own. Vote. Vote. Vote. Do research on what candidates actually believe and look at their voting history. Stay informed. Vote. Be the change.

Will you stand with me? [MORE]

Kola Boof: The Message & The Messenger

Kola Boof: The Message & The Messenger | Herstory | Scoop.it

Perhaps I am too Utopian *wink* but I do believe that when we gain insight & understanding, we can put our hearts & ethics into action. I respect the hell out of Kola Boof. Admire her greatly. Even when her words sting. For behind them, truth rings. I'd like to think there are others out there who can be taught daily, and not just from some 'word a day' calendar.

Gracie talks with Kola about the messages in her book of poems, Nile River Woman.

“OUR GOD IS WOMAN, OUR MISSION IS PROTEST, OUR WEAPONS ARE BARE BREASTS!” – FEMEN

Ukraine’s depressed economy and ease of entry into the country have fuelled the rise of sex tourism in recent years. There are approximately twelve thousand prostitutes in Ukraine and in the capital, Kiev, it is estimated that up to sixty percent of the total number of sex workers are university students. Femen, a Kiev-based women’s rights organization, was formed in 2008 in an effort to fight against prostitution and the growing sex tourism industry. Femen now protests on a range of issues: from women’s rights in the Middle East to Internet censorship. The group consists mostly of young, female university students, and much of the media attention surrounding Femen has focused on the fact that its members protest topless. Threats from the Ukrainian Secret Services, multiple arrests, Facebook censorship, and a lack of money, have failed to deter Femen from staging their almost weekly protests. Sitting in Café Cupid, the basement bar that Femen uses as their headquarters, Inna Shevchenko, one of the key members of the group, chatted to us about what it’s like to be a member of Femen and the future of the organisation.
