Police Woman: The Long Octopus Arms Twarting Female Police Detectives

Police Woman: The Long Octopus Arms Twarting Female Police Detectives | Herstory | Scoop.it

Most of us tend to think of Angie Dickinson when we think of police women — and it’s not just because she was Sgt. Suzanne “Pepper” Anderson on Police Woman...

But in truth, there not only were female cops before then, but they were the result of what we’d now call “unlikely feminists” — and some bad male behavior. These battles would be more dangerous than tangling with an octopus.

You may have heard of Isabella Goodwin, the first US woman detective appointed in New York City on March 1, 1912 (it’s the sort of “fun historical fact” people like to blog about, say, on March 1st). But few take the time to give you some real information about her —

It's Time for Women of Color to Talk Back

It's Time for Women of Color to Talk Back | Herstory | Scoop.it
"We cannot separate the culture of objectification of women from literal, physical attacks, where women of color are often disproportionately targeted due to their exotification and stereotyped hypersexuality."

Curator comment: Sexual irresponsibility cannot be adequately addressed without continual acknowledgement of our rapacious cultural appetite for sexual exploitation.

Following some of the links from this article resulted in the discovery of the wonderful SPARK, "a girl-fueled activist movement to demand an end to the sexualization of women and girls in media."

Hip-hop study yields crucial insights in other fields | Harvard Crimson

Hip-hop study yields crucial insights in other fields | Harvard Crimson | Herstory | Scoop.it

“I’m looking at whether Nicki Minaj’s hyper-sexuality through her body and her appearance promotes rigid gender types, and then whether that enforces ideas of homophobia within hip-hop,” Mcginty says. She is also examining Minaj’s gay male alter ego, Roman Zolanski, and whether her performance of a man plays into her hyper-sexuality or complicates it.

Hip Hop Archive at Harvard University.

The below quote is an excerpt from the article in which I find really interesting, "...........This Afro-Brazilian community was also a big consumer of African-American styles of music. They could not understand exactly what African-Americans were saying due to the language barrier, but because of the civil rights imagery on the covers of vinyl records, they understood what these musicians were talking about."

Interesting perspectivies on how Hip Hop influences other genres.  Good read.
