The first draft of the 2017 ISTE Standards for Teachers | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it

About the teacher standards refresh

The ISTE Standards provide a framework for learning, teaching and leading that is amplified by technology. These digital age standards are not "technology standards," but a road map for educators worldwide as they navigate decisions about curriculum, instruction, professional learning and how to transform pedagogy with technology. ISTE refreshes the individual standards in the suite every seven to ten years to ensure they remain relevant and continue to prepare students for the future while also allowing schools, districts and states to have time to adopt, implement and show an impact on learning.

Explore the ISTE Standards, the definitive standards for learning and teaching with technology.

If you need a rubric, or need ideas of what to include on a rubric and how it could be formatted, you will find many examples at this university site.  I was surprised to see rubrics for mind maps and PowerPoint presentations as well as for elementary and middle school research topics.  There is a lot here to look at.

Being Human in a Digital Age?

I’m exploring what it means to be human in a digital age and what role universities play in developing learners for this experience. Against the backdrop of everything is changing, we aren’t paying enough attention to what we are becoming. The Becoming is the central role of education in a machine learning, artificial intelligence era. It’s great to see people like Michael Wesch exploring the formative aspect of education. Randy Bass’s work on Formation by Design is also notable and important.

I spent a few weeks in Brisbane recently working with the Faculty of Health on digital learning and how to prepare the higher education system for this new reality. On my final presentation, I focused on the needs of learners in this environment and what we need to focus on to help develop their capabilities to be adaptive and respond to continual changes.

The Class: Living and Learning in the Digital Age

The Class: Living and Learning in the Digital Age | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it

This qualitative research project by Dr Sonia Livingstone Professor in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE and Julian Sefton-Green  Principal Research Fellow at the Department of Media & Communication, LSE, followed a class of London teenagers over the course of a year to find out more about how they are operating in the online digital world.

The study shows how individual students interact (often very differently) with online technology and it examines relationships between home and school identifying some of the (serious) issues and areas of conflict that arise.

"In exploring the lives of these young people within and beyond the bounds of the class and the school, this book offers a rich portrait of young people’s everyday lives. Most simply, we wanted to get beyond the many fearful claims circulating among adults about today’s youth - that they are so immersed in the online world that they cannot concentrate on learning, that they neglect family life, that they disrespect their parents and teachers, even that they no longer establish their own values or sustain a sense of privacy"

In a discussion piece in the English and Media Centre blog, Julian writes:

" ...attempts to use the media across the boundary of home and school were actually seriously policed, or did not function as intended. SIMS worked really well as a form of digital surveillance while all too often the VLE didn't work or wasn't properly understood by either teachers or students. Mobile phones, which could of course be very useful, were forbidden in school. For all the talk about living in a connected world, the students didn't want teachers or parents to have access to their world and the same was true of the adults."

This longitudinal research looks at at experience as well as outcomes, something that is sometimes missing from a great deal of educational research. You can buy the report here or read it free online. The work is shared under a Creative Commons BY NC SA Licence.

Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda

Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it

"...the following chapters offer a step-by-step guide for individuals, groups, and organizations looking to replicate the Tea Party’s success in getting Congress to listen to a small, vocal, dedicated group of constituents. The guide is intended to be equally useful for stiffening Democratic spines and weakening pro-Trump Republican resolve.

We believe that the next four years depend on citizens across the country standing indivisible against the Trump agenda. We believe that buying into false promises or accepting partial concessions will only further empower Trump to victimize our fellow citizens. We hope that this guide will provide those who share that belief useful tools to make Congress listen."

Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach | Newland | Research in Learning Technology

Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach | Newland | Research in Learning Technology | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it

For each literacy, there is an explanation of what the literacy is, why it is important and how to gain it, with links to resources and training opportunities. After an initial pilot, the DLF website was launched in the summer of 2014. This paper discusses the strategic context and policy development of the DLF, its initial conception and subsequent development based on a pilot phase, feedback and evaluation. It critically analyses two of the ways that engagement with the DLF have been promoted: (1) formal professional development schemes and (2) the use of a ‘School-based’ approach. It examines the successes and challenges of the University of Brighton’s scheme and makes some suggestions for subsequent steps including taking a course-level approach.
