What is Four-Dimensional Education?

What is Four-Dimensional Education? | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it
According to Center for Curriculum Redesign (CCR) founder Charles Fadel, education is “falling behind its mission to prepare students for the future: a world that’s increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.” Curriculum was significantly redesigned in the late 1800’s when societal and human capital needs demanded it. But the 21st century bears little resemblance to the past. WHAT should we teach young people in an age where Dr. Google has an answer for everything? Humans are living longer; the traditional professions disappear while new ones are created; international mobility is drastically increasing population diversity; terrorism, environmental threats and inequality need our collective attention; and robots and gene editing are coming, requiring us to re-examine the very core of what it means to be human. WHAT does all that we know now, and all that we still can only imagine, mean for Curriculum?

"In order to deepen and enhance the learning in these three dimensions — Knowledge, Skills, and Character qualities–there is an important additional fourth dimension needed for a fully comprehensive twenty-first century education: Meta-Learning (often called learning to learn–the internal processes by which we reflect on and adapt our learning)"

Bloom's revised Taxonomy with verbs!

Jim Lerman's curator insight, August 20, 12:55 PM

I'm on a personal campaign to add 2 levels above Creating to Bloom's Cognitive Taxonomy (don't forget he wrote about 3 domains of learning...Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor). I believe our field tends to overemphasize the Cognitive domain at the expense of the other 2, and to the detriment of learners.

Anyhow, the 2 levels above Creating that I'm concerned about are: Reflecting and Sharing. My reasoning goes like this:

Reflecting Once we go through all 6 levels (and they are not hierarchical, a learning sequence can start or end with any of them), if we want students to enhance their metacognition, it is important for us to build in reflective experiences. Such experiences enhance students' abilities to be more self-aware of how they learn and the strategies that do or don't work well for them.

Sharing - We teachers often remark that our knowledge of a particular topic solidifies when we teach it to someone else...the act of sharing brings out our awareness of nuances, relationships, perceptions, modes of expression/communication, and our interpersonal skills of working with others; all things that are very important to people's success in our current era. Our students deserve to become proficient in sharing effectively.

My 2 cents.

The Role of Metacognition in Learning and Achievement

The Role of Metacognition in Learning and Achievement | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it
Perhaps the most important reason for developing metacognition is that it can improve the application of knowledge, skills, and character qualities in realms beyond the immediate context in which they were learned. This can result in the transfer of competencies across disciplines—important for students preparing for real-life situations where clear-cut divisions of disciplines fall away and one must select competencies from the entire gamut of their experience to effectively apply them to the challenges at hand. Even within academic settings, it is valuable—and often necessary—to apply principles and methods across disciplinary lines.

5 great resources for Instructional Designers

5 great resources for Instructional Designers | Herramientas para investigadores | Scoop.it

Keeping up with the newest theories, designs, and technologies is part of an instructional designer’s job. With so many resources out there it’s difficult to find just one resource that offers everything needed to keep up with advances in the market. Here are a few resources that offer instructional designers resources, ideas, and research that can aid in the development of any design project.

Learning Theories, Concepts, and Design Models

Every instructional designer has had a specific project that is designed based on a precise learning theory, concept, or design model. Let’s face it: We all continue to learn as we grow in the profession. Instructional Design.org provides instructional designers an easy reference to quickly refresh their memory or learn more about the various requests a client may have for a project.

Digital portfolios are something that are really starting to take off in schools. There are different software programs that will make “portfolios” easy to share, yet do we truly embrace the power that a digital portfolio can bring into our schools? Since it is “digital”, we need to go beyond a portfolio that only represents one year of learning, but can show the progression over time.

LibrarianLand's curator insight, August 12, 12:23 PM
This is a good reminder of what should be in a syllabus. At best these provide the instructor with protection from accusations from students of "I didn't know," plus they force us to organize the class and layout its objectives for ourselves and our students.
