Every plastic product, even filament, starts out in pellet form. Because of this, raw pellets are readily available in thousands of different materials, colors, and grades. By printing directly with plastic pellets, David can print with many more materials than traditional 3D printers - making him useful to many more people and industries.

Xerox's Robot Printer Brings Your Documents Right To You

Xerox's Robot Printer Brings Your Documents Right To You | Heron | Scoop.it

The one advantage to the paperless office being nowhere in sight is that every time you print something you get to leave your desk and waste time while wandering over to the copy room. At least until Fuji Xerox's robot printer concept that delivers printed documents right to your desk becomes commonplace.

Thanks to an all-seeing laser LIDAR scanner perched atop the machine that creates a 3D map of a room for navigation purposes, the robot can maneuver around desks and other obstacles with ease. And to keep private documents private, it doesn't actually start printing until it arrives at the desk of whoever requested its services. So your opportunities to chat with Ted in accounting every time you need a TPS report might be numbered.

Programmable self-assembly in a thousand-robot swarm

Self-assembly enables nature to build complex forms, from multicellular organisms to complex animal structures such as flocks of birds, through the interaction of vast numbers of limited and unreliable individuals. Creating this ability in engineered systems poses challenges in the design of both algorithms and physical systems that can operate at such scales. We report a system that demonstrates programmable self-assembly of complex two-dimensional shapes with a thousand-robot swarm. This was enabled by creating autonomous robots designed to operate in large groups and to cooperate through local interactions and by developing a collective algorithm for shape formation that is highly robust to the variability and error characteristic of large-scale decentralized systems. This work advances the aim of creating artificial swarms with the capabilities of natural ones.
