Liquorice: Anti-Tumour Properties

Liquorice: Anti-Tumour Properties | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it
Liquiritigenin, a natural flavanone existing in glycyrrhiza species (Licorice – Liquorice), shows extensive biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

In studies by Liu et al, liquiritigenin effectively inhibited the growth of tumors in animal model systems.

The expression and secretion of Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), that stimulates vasculogenesis and angiogenesis were down-regulated by the Liquorice component. Therefore, it is suggested that liquiritigenin can be further studied on cancer and other diseases associated with VEGF up-regulation.

Liquorice is a key component in ‘The Wise Herb Company’ range of products. Check out our products page for more information.

Among the tested compounds, [6]-gingerol and [6]-shogaol showed potent anti-platelet aggregation bioactivity. Also, [10]-gingerol inhibited the Calcium-dependent contractions in high potassium medium.

The results suggest the bioactivity of ginger in relation to anti-platelet aggregation and vasorelaxing mechanisms.

Cinnamon: Health Benefits

Cinnamon: Health Benefits | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it
he Latest scientific research on the Health Benefits of Cinnamon is outlined below. We have seen in previous articles on this website how Cinnamon is able to help maintain and prevent certain chronic conditions as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Brain Protection:

Shaltiel-Karyor et al, investigated the inhibition pattern of oligomeric and fibrillar forms of α-synuclein, using a natural substance, Cinnamon Extract which was previously shown to effectively inhibit aggregation of β-amyloid polypeptide. The oligomeriztion of α-synuclein into ordered assemblies is associated with the symptoms of Parkinson’s diseas The investigators demonstrated that Cinnamon Extract has a differential inhibitory effect on the formation of soluble and insoluble aggregates of α-synuclein in an model system.

CONCLUSIONS:
They concluded that Cinnamon affects the process of aggregation of α-synuclein without changing its secondary structure and suggest that increasing amounts of cinnamon slow this process by stabilizing the soluble oligomeric phase.

SLIM&FIT after Indulgence

Ginger
Ginger has been used as a medicine in Asian, Indian, and Arabic herbal traditions for many thousands of years. Ginger has been used to help digestion and treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea for more than 2,000 years.

The important active components of the ginger root are mainly phenolic compounds like gingerols and shogaols.

Medicinal Uses:

Nowadays health care professionals are recommending ginger treat nausea and vomiting from motion sickness, pregnancy, and cancer chemotherapy. It is also used as a digestive aid for a mild stomach upset.

Motion Sickness

Several studies suggest that ginger may in ameliorating symptoms of motion sickness. Sailors were actually tested in one trial and ginger seemed to reduce vomiting and cold sweating. It is possible that Ginger produces antimotion sickness action possibly by central and peripheral anticholinergic and antihistaminic effects.

Pregnancy-Related Nausea and Vomiting

Ginger may be effective for nausea and vomiting in pregnant women when used for short periods (no longer than 4 days). Several studies have found that ginger is better than placebo in relieving morning sickness.

Pregnant women with severe vomiting who took ginger every day for 4 days reported more relief from vomiting than those who took placebo.

Chemotherapy nausea

There have been several studies that indicate that ginger reduces the severity and duration of nausea during chemotherapy.

Amla
In an animal study results indicate that Amla extract (Emblica officinalis) possesses antisecretory, antiulcer, and cytoprotective properties.

Green Tea
Research on Green tea has been publicised widely on this website. It looks like the Green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate shows therapeutic antioxidative effects in colitis. Furthermore Green Tea may offer some anti-cancer protection in the gut.

Fennel
Fennel has also been shown to have a protective effect against gastric mucosal lesions and this seems to depend upon the reduction in lipid peroxidation and augmentation in its antioxidant activity. Studies also provide evidence that natural ingredients like Fennel have additional beneficial effects and can help gastrointestinal disorders.

The decreased levels of angiogenic factors (e.g. proteases, cyclooxygenase-2, & vascular endothelial growth factor) in KA treatments may be due to the ameliorative effect of phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and other compounds present in components like Amla (Emblica officinalis).

Amla is a key ingredient in the CALM&RELAX and SLIM&FIT recipes.

Notes: Angiogenesis is a fundamental step in the transition of tumorsfrom a dormant state to a malignant one

Ginger & Arthritic Pain

Ginger & Arthritic Pain | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it
Arthritic pain was evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) with Ginger oral treatments by Drozdov et al.

Results suggest that Ginger could provide relevant and significantly lowered pain on a VAS scale both on standing and moving. The ginger combination is as effective as diclofenac – a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug – but safer in treating osteoarthritis, because it does not have a negative effect on the stomach mucosa.

The increased mucosal Prostaglandin synthesis in the ginger treatment group suggests an increased mucosa-protective potential.

Ginger is a key ingredient in The Wise Herb Company range of products.
