Ginger and Anti-Cancer Benefits

Ginger and Anti-Cancer Benefits | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it
The objective of a study by Plengsuriyakarn et al was to investigate the cytotoxicity, toxicity, and anticancer activity of an extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale) against a certain type of cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma).

Various controlled trails were conducted in an animal model system. Results from these in vitro and in vivo investigations indicate that Ginger may have anticancer activity in this type of cancer. There was also absence of significant toxicity.

The results suggest that Ginger and/or its components could have some therapeutic role in cancer treatments (particularly in Cholangiocarcinoma). Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancerous (malignant) growth in one of the ducts that carries bile from the liver to the small intestine.

Focus on Hibiscus

Focus on Hibiscus | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it
Focus on Key InnOrbit Ingredient Hibiscus

Hibiscus is plant with a bright red flower. It is the flower which can be mixed with other herbs and spices or used by itself to make an infusion and drunk hot or cold.

In the Carribean and South America it is also referred to as Rosella or Red Sorrel and Bissap in West Africa.

Hibiscus has a tart, cranberry-like flavour hence its use in InnOrbit to balance out sweeter flavours like Liquorice. It contains vitamin C and and is used in traditional medicine, in cultures like Ayurveda, to treat a number of conditions e.g. lowering blood pressure.

In more recent scientific studies it has been found to be potentially helpful in a number of chronic conditions hence supporting its traditional use.

Phenolic acids and flavonols like quercetin were identified in Hibiscus by Fernández-Arroyo et al. Phenolic acids have antioxidant activity. The study proposes that flavonol-conjugated forms (quercetin and kaempferol) may be the compounds responsible for the observed antioxidant effects and contribute to the healthy effects of Hibiscus extract.

Notes on Hypertension: From The Wise Herb Company

Notes on Hypertension: From The Wise Herb Company | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it

The Wise Herb Company’s healthy infusions are a perfect complement to the seven heart health factors posted here. The natural herbs and spices in the traditional recipes have been implicated in maintaining a healthy heart and are used as key ingredients in our range of Functional drinks (UP&GO; SLIM&FIT; CALM&RELAX; YOUNG&FUN).

Indeed, investigators in several universities found that higher urinary counts of polyphenols were associated with greatly reduced cardiovascular risks. Article can be viewed here.

Researchers have also been telling us that oxidative stress produced by increased free radical levels induces hypertension by lowering the levels of nitric oxide in the body. Antioxidants, in the form of polyphenolics in herbs and spices, are able to mop up these free radicals.

The research team are now looking at how blood pressure and nitric oxide can be affected by other antioxidants and how diet can play a role in regulating levels of free radicals and nitric oxide, thus affecting the regulation of blood pressure (article can be read HERE). Thankfully, the infusions in our range are jam-packed full of polyphenolics and antioxidants.

Blood-Sugar Management & Diabetes: Healthy Choices

Blood-Sugar Management & Diabetes: Healthy Choices | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it

Due to several factors, but mostly obesity, the incidences of type 2 diabetes has risen sharply in the last few years. It is estimated that around 7 million people in the USA do not know they might have diabetes and have a condition known as prediabetes. This could develop into a serious health problem which will have consequences on other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease.

Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes typically progresses to type 2 within about 10 years. This is not good news since during that 10 years, before full blown diabetes has been reached, there is a high price to pay in terms of strain on the cardiovascular system.

Blood-sugar-management can help to reverse prediabetes and so prevent diabetes.
Some simple lifestyle changes (cutting back on certain foods in combination with exercise) could play an important role in helping the well-being of of millions of people. Natural products like herbs and spices (e.g. Cinnamon) could also help to control blood-sugar levels in combination with a healthy lifestyle.

Market trends
The Nutrition Business Journal put blood-sugar management supplement sales at $670 million. By 2011, sales had reached $1.1 billion — about 50% growth in five years.
The Baby boomer generation, in particular, want foods and supplements that help balance blood sugar levels with 42% of this group wanting products with this health functionality.

Key Ingredients that could help blood-sugar levels
The mineral chromium and the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid are well-researched nutrients for healthy insulin function. Vitamin D, biotin and the minerals magnesium and vanadium are other ingredients which look like they work. These types of ingredients are being included and marketed specifically to this sector in various products. Green tea is also now being included in this group and herbs and spices are following quickly.

Green Tea Health Benefits: The Latest Science

Green Tea Health Benefits: The Latest Science | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it
Pulmonary Fibrosis
Pulmonary fibrosis manifests itself as shortness of breath. Many patients describe it as a feeling of “breathlessness” and often ignore the occasional difficulty with breathing, attributing it to just “getting older” or “being out of shape.” As the condition progresses and the damage to the lungs become more severe, breathlessness may occur with minor physical activity such as showering, getting dressed. A history of smoking has been associated with an increased risk of IPF, and a variety of published studies show that, on average, two thirds of those with IPF have a history of smoking.

A study by Hamdy et al investigated the protective effect of green tea extract (GTE) amongst others on experimentally induced pulmonary fibrosis in a aninal system. The data indicates the possibility of using Green Tea and other treatments as protective agents with chemotherapy and as protective agents for lung fibrosis.

Periodonitis
Periodontitis is inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth.

Green tea extract can act as an anti-microbial agent due to its bioactive polyphenols (catechins). Catechins have anti-cariogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-collagenolytic properties. Chava & Vedula studied the release of green tea gels and its clinical effects on chronic periodontitis patients. The results suggest that Green Tea can reduce pockets and inflammation during a 4 week clinical trial in chronic periodontitis patients.

Blood pressure lowering antioxidant activities of cardamom

Blood pressure lowering antioxidant activities of cardamom | Herbs & Spices | Scoop.it

Administration of 3 g cardamom powder significantly decreased systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure and significantly increased fibrinolytic activity at the end of 12th week.

Total antioxidant status was also significantly increased by 90% at the end of 3 months. Fibrinogen and lipid levels were not significantly altered. Total antioxidant status was also assessed initially and at the end of the study.

All study subjects experienced a feeling of well being without any side-effects. Thus, the present study demonstrates that cardamom may help in reducing blood pressure, enhancing fibrinolysis and improving antioxidant status, without significantly altering blood lipids and fibrinogen levels in hypertensive individuals.

Cardamom is a key ingredient in the InnOrbit Young&Fun ayurvedic drink.
