How to Improve Your Iron Absorption | Fooducate

How to Improve Your Iron Absorption | Fooducate | Heme iron | Scoop.it
Feeling tired lately despite lots of sleep? Are you feeling weak even though you eat a lot? Is your skin looking more pale than normal?
Michael Collan's insight:

"Per calorie, legumes and leafy greens are especially good sources of iron, even better than meat. However, there is an issue of iron absorption. The non-heme iron found in plant based foods is not absorbed as well as heme iron in the body. For comparison: 15-35% of heme iron is absorbed by our digestive system, while only 2-20% of non-heme iron is absorbed. Despite this, vegetarians do not have a higher incidence of iron deficiency than do meat eaters."
