Turning tables on poisoning poachers

Turning tables on poisoning poachers | Help save our Rhinos | Scoop.it

Two can play the poisoning game - poachers poison animals to get their hands on horn or ivory but now poisons are being used in the fight back by conservationists.

On the Plumari Game Reserve, in the Magaliesberg, 45 minutes northwest of Johannesburg, the six surviving rhino were yesterday darted with a sedative and their horns infused with poison.....

Lorinda Hern, co-founder of the Rhino Rescue Project, said more than 200 rhino horns had been poisoned in this way in South Africa.

"If someone were to inhale too many of these compounds [injected into the horn], ingest them or handle large quantities of horn, they would start to [experience] nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and perhaps nerve damage," she said.

If a large amount of horn were consumed it could prove lethal....

Sabine Anderson's insight:

If this is the only way then so be it! Poachers don't have limits and just kill, kill and kill till there is nothing more to kill! So we as caring people have to do what needs to be done! Well Done, Plumari Game Reserve! Enough is NOW enough!

“Pandas of Africa” Need Help Staying Alive, WildAid Campaign in China Says | Help save our Rhinos | Scoop.it

Most of the ivory and rhino horn taken from animals slaughtered by poachers is sold to people in China and other countries in East Asia.

The folks at WildAid are confident that, by convincing these people to stop buying such products, they will throw poachers off theirgame and thus save elephants and rhinos from being hunted to extinction.

To achieve this goal, the organization has launched a new green-oriented campaign by the name “Say No to Ivory and Rhino Horn.”...

"First and foremost, this is about saving the black rhino," said Ben Carter, executive director of the Dallas Safari Club, which is hosting the auction early next year.
Sabine Anderson's insight:

How much money could we raise if we auctioned a permit to shoot the hunter? One dead Rhino is too much, why do these poor animals have to go through so much trauma to satisfy some multi millionaires sick pride to show off to his rich and equally sick friends? Why don't these rich bastards put their money where their mouth is and donate the money they would have spent at the auction to a worthy anti poaching team or SAN Parks, who are doing a fantastic job without any funding! They are the most dedicated bunch of people and I would if I could support you!
