Limpopo park hit by rhino poachers

Limpopo park hit by rhino poachers | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

CAPE TOWN - SANParks says it’s shocked following the first poaching incident at the Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo.

A rhino bull was shot and dehorned by an unknown number of poachers on Wednesday, making it the first reported incident at the national park.

Police and SANParks environmental crime investigators are searching the area for clues.

Spokesperson Ike Phaahla says they will be looking into more security at the park.

“We’re shocked at the incident but we’re continuing to fight this battle against rhino poaching and we are going to strengthen security.”

Phahla said their mandate was conservation and would leave matters of the law infringement to the police service....

The number of rhinos poached for their horns this year has risen to 1 051… which is higher than last year’s figure of 1004, and the year isn’t over yet. The statistics are frightening.

Poachers beware! #Parabot is after you [AAD141] - IHS Jane's 360

Poachers beware! #Parabot is after you [AAD141] - IHS Jane's 360 | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

Towering over the exhibition site, the 9.7m tall #Parabot has come to AAD with a purpose: to raise awareness of the plight of Africa’s endangered wildlife, particularly the rhino. The problem is huge: so far this year more than 760 rhinos have been taken by poachers in South Africa, and the Kruger National Park has borne the brunt.

Topped with a giant horn, the one-tonne ‘Transformer’- like #Parabot is based on Paramount Group’s Mbombe 6 armoured vehicle. As well as standing as a timely symbol of resistance to the rhino trade just days before World Rhino Day on 22 September, #Parabot also highlights the part the defence industry can play in stopping poaching by providing equipment, technology and training....

Interview with Kruger’s anti-poaching chief

Interview with Kruger’s anti-poaching chief | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

An interview with Major-General Johan Jooste, the man in charge of anti-poaching at South African National Parks....

There’s a small sign above Major-General Johan Jooste’s desk at his office in Skukuza, the headquarters of Kruger National Park. It says: “Think Big, Start Small, Act Now”. It’s an apt credo for the man in charge of anti-poaching at South African National Parks.

The 61-year-old ex-army general joined the organisation in 2013, and has been tasked with one of the country’s biggest, most immediate challenges: combatting the scourge of rhino poaching. Last year, 606 rhino were killed in Kruger, out of a total number in South Africa of 1004. “We are fighting a war,” says Jooste, who retired from the army in 2006 after 35 years of service, but also has an MBA and has worked in business development in the arms industry.

Wildlife experts lose one to two black rhinoceros each year from anesthesia complications when they capture and relocate the animals. That’s 1 to 2 percent of the black rhinos that are moved annually, but with only 5,000 or so left in the wild in southern Africa, any losses are too many....

In a bid to reduce rhino poaching, the South African government is considering tabling a proposal to legalise trade in rhino horn at the 17th Conference of Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 2016. It’s a hugely controversial issue, with passionate advocates and opponents. Springbok skipper Jean de Villiers wants to take his two little girls, Lana and Layli, to see rhinos when they’re a bit older. But he fears that at the rate they’re being poached, this may never happen.

De Villiers, who is the ambassador for race organisers Resolution Health and Zurreal, says that each rider will be given a number representing a real rhino....
