Dr Hector Magome speaks out on SANParks Rhino Sale | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

“In this sad saga, rhinos and South Africa are the only losers. The 500
rhinos that could have been removed this year remain trapped in the
Kruger in a raging war of bullets.”

— Dr Hector Magome

Confusion around the SANParks sale and removal of 260 rhinos has deepened after the man accused of making an unauthorised decision to sell the Kruger National Park animals has spoken out in his defence....

Interview with Kruger’s anti-poaching chief

Interview with Kruger’s anti-poaching chief | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

An interview with Major-General Johan Jooste, the man in charge of anti-poaching at South African National Parks....

There’s a small sign above Major-General Johan Jooste’s desk at his office in Skukuza, the headquarters of Kruger National Park. It says: “Think Big, Start Small, Act Now”. It’s an apt credo for the man in charge of anti-poaching at South African National Parks.

The 61-year-old ex-army general joined the organisation in 2013, and has been tasked with one of the country’s biggest, most immediate challenges: combatting the scourge of rhino poaching. Last year, 606 rhino were killed in Kruger, out of a total number in South Africa of 1004. “We are fighting a war,” says Jooste, who retired from the army in 2006 after 35 years of service, but also has an MBA and has worked in business development in the arms industry.

Study helps prevent rhino deaths during relocation | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

Wildlife experts lose one to two black rhinoceros each year from anesthesia complications when they capture and relocate the animals. That’s 1 to 2 percent of the black rhinos that are moved annually, but with only 5,000 or so left in the wild in southern Africa, any losses are too many....

SANParks has no Plan to Save the Rhino? Citizens do! | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

SANParks was at pains yesterday to play down earlier reports that it was planning to sell and relocate some of its rhinos to save them from poachers.

"There is no board-approved plan, there has never been one. It is misleading to suggest that there is one," SANParks chairman Kuseni Dlamini said....

At the corner of Jellicoe and Jan Smuts avenues, in Rosebank, Johannesburg, is a billboard flashing the number of rhinos poached this year.

In the 10 days the billboard has been up, outside vet Peter Baker's premises, the number of rhinos poached was shown to have increased from 554 to 565. That was yesterday....

SANParks plans rhino rescue operation

SANParks plans rhino rescue operation | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

As the rhino poaching issue intensifies, the Kruger National Park plans a last-ditch effort to evacuate 500 rhino to secret locations in a desperate bid to save the species.....

However, the sudden departure of SANParks CEO David Mabunda and the suspension of Dr Hector Magoma, head of conservation services, has halted the rhino rescue plan in its tracks.

Mabunda was relieved of his duties five days before his contract came up for renewal – after 15 years.

This was reportedly followed by a slew of suspensions and cancelled contracts of senior managers and service providers. Among the suspensions was Magoma who was let go last month over allegations of benefitting through the sale and relocation of rhinos....

CAPE TOWN - SANParks says it’s shocked following the first poaching incident at the Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo.

A rhino bull was shot and dehorned by an unknown number of poachers on Wednesday, making it the first reported incident at the national park.

Police and SANParks environmental crime investigators are searching the area for clues.

Spokesperson Ike Phaahla says they will be looking into more security at the park.

“We’re shocked at the incident but we’re continuing to fight this battle against rhino poaching and we are going to strengthen security.”

Phahla said their mandate was conservation and would leave matters of the law infringement to the police service....
