A baby rhino who was saved after his mother was killed by poachers is on the road to recovery, his rescuers have said.

The animal, who has been named Gertjie, was taken to a conservation centre in South Africa where staff introduced a sheep as a surrogate mother.

Agents Tackle Rhino Horn Smuggling From Miami Hotel Room

Agents Tackle Rhino Horn Smuggling From Miami Hotel Room | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

The trafficker was pleased. He had already peddled $3 million of his illicit product and stood to make a nice profit on the deal in front of him.

The undercover agent was nervous. It had taken two years of work to reach this point. “This was an international investigation of international significance,” said agent Tim Santel. “I didn’t want him walking away.”

While the sting in a posh Miami hotel room last year had the mark of a drug probe, the smuggler wasn’t buying narcotics, and the agent didn’t work for the FBI or DEA. Zhifei Li, 29, an antiques shop owner from China, was after rhinoceros horn, worth more on Asia’s streets than gold, cocaine or heroin. And Santel is a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service....

Open Letter to Kendall Jones - the Hunter Who Has Become The Hunted

Open Letter to Kendall Jones - the Hunter Who Has Become The Hunted | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

So Kendall, I get the feeling this is why people have commented on your Facebook page. The hunter has become the hunted. Thousands of messages  from shocked and angry people have  landed on your page and told you exactly what they think of you faster than you can block and ban them....

...you think those of us who are vegetarian, vegan, anti-hunting etc  are crazy don't you Kendall.   You like to poke  fun on your page at those of us who have respect and compassion for our fellow planet dwellers. That is fine, you can think that if you wish, but perhaps next time you preen in front of the mirror  take a good long hard look at yourself  and see the truth of an ugly soul looking back at you.

Your vanity in it's sickening need to proudly pose next to a dead animal is highly unattractive. Your need to place your foot upon  the body of an animal is a concern. I suggest you get some therapy and soon....

Namibia: How to declare war against rhino poachers discussed at strategy meeting

OPUWO – The Governor of Kunene, Joshua //Hoebeb, has urged Namibians to declare war on rhino poachers.
Speaking at a meeting held at Sesfontein on Friday to strategise on ways to prevent rhino poaching in Namibia, //Hoebeb also called for game guards to be properly armed to enable them to protect wildlife.

“If this is a war then it warrants us bringing in members of the Namibia Defence Force. It is being done in Botswana and it is working. There, members of the defence force are protecting wildlife, why not in Namibia?” he said.

//Hoebeb further stated that rhinos are prime natural resources not only for Namibia, but for the whole world and they need to be protected at all costs.

The meeting was organised by the office of the governor a week after a rhino cow and its calf were killed by poachers in Kunene....

Kenya drone ban undermines rhino preservation plan

Kenya drone ban undermines rhino preservation plan | Help save our Rhino | Scoop.it

One of Kenya's largest game reserves has been forced to halt plans to use drones to monitor its endangered rhinos because of a government ban, park officials said Wednesday.

Ol Pejeta conservancy, home to four of the world's last remaining seven northern white rhinos, said they had planned to launch the 'aerial ranger', equipped with a thermal imaging camera to track wildlife in real time, this month.

But Kenyan authorities have banned the private use of drones, deeming them to be a security threat....

About 20 people gathered outside the Museum of Art in Tsim Sha Tsui yesterday morning to protest against an exhibition of artefacts made from rhino horn and elephant ivory.

The demonstrators, many of them children, waved placards outside the Salisbury Road museum, accusing it of benefiting the black-market trade in the items.

The museum is hosting until September 28 the exhibition of 270 Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasty (1644-1911) objects made exclusively for the imperial court. The artefacts are from local man C.P.Lin's personal collection...
