Ski Biomechanics and Ski Orthotics

Ski Biomechanics and Ski Orthotics | Heel Lift | Scoop.it
Ski Orthotic from www.atlasbiomechanics.com.
Teri Green's insight:

The typical downhill skier's lower extremities never goes through a complete gait cycle. They ideally should have limited pedal mechanics between midstance and the beginning of propulsion, with the knee in flexion during the contact phase. When initiating a turn, a skier will maintain their control by directly the downhill knee medially and transferring the load onto the foot over the inside edge. This is done by internally rotating their tibia, causing a closed kinetic chain pronation of the foot which transfers the pressure through the boot onto the ski edge.

In ski boots the subtalar joint supination and pronation are responding to knee function by the supporting foot anatomy. In a ski boot there may be too much medial room and there will be an inefficient transfer of force to the ski edge as the tibia and knee move medially. That os were a ski orthotic from Atlas Biomechanics, www.atlasbiomechanics.com comes in.

A ski orthotic from www.atlasbiomechanics.com is usually heat molded directly to the foot in neutral position while the ski orthotic is heated under the boot's insole. By controlling the medial arch and preventing over pronation, the skier will have more efficient transfer of energy and decrease overall foot and knee fatigue.

Heel Lifts to Treat Achilles Tendonitis

Heel Lifts to Treat Achilles Tendonitis | Heel Lift | Scoop.it
Teri Green's insight:

There are several ways to treat Achilles Tendonitis, these include NSAIDs, orthotics, rest, ice, stretching, and PT. One should include heel lifts in this group. Heel lifts are often over looked by practitioners and patients. But this simple inexpensive medical device can make a huge difference in the healing time of Achilles Tendinitis. A heel lift is usually placed at the back of a shoe to raise the Calcaneus (heel) Bone. When a heel lift is used, it will slightly decrease the tension on the tendon and effectively shorten it. This off loading will provide relief and allow for faster healing.

http://www.atlasbiomechanics.com/heel_lifts_s/1821.htm ;  has heel lifts in several sizes to treat Achilles Tendonitis. The most common height used by practitioners to treat Achilles Tendonitis is their 6 mm heel lift.
