This is a reminder to both students and teachers (we are all learners) that a can-do attitude can help us to overcome barriers and obstacles to growth. Often we see a single route to success. When that pathway is blocked, we may give up. But a positive attitude supports multiple pathways and once we persevere we find them. It is about growth, not about benchmarks - any growth, small or large is positive.

Description by The Scout Report

"This series of twelve lectures by art historian John Walsh (who holds a PhD in art history from Columbia and headed the J. Paul Getty Museum for almost two decades) explores the history of painting as a way to express stories. As Walsh notes, History painting is a genre that dominated the art world for several centuries until other forms of art - most notably abstract art - eventually became more prominent. This proliferation of abstract art has impacted how contemporary art historians and museum visitors interpret History paintings; viewers are more likely to focus on design than narrative. In this series of one hour lectures, Walsh explores the genre of History painting in depth. Lectures may especially be of interest to art history students and instructors."

Do You Know How Each Person on Your Team Likes to Work?

Do You Know How Each Person on Your Team Likes to Work? | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it

When we travel to a country that has a different culture than ours, many of us spend time learning ways to communicate and connect with the people there. We might look up the meanings of common terms and access maps of key attractions.

Similarly, when you first become a manager, it’s helpful to spend time up front connecting and creating a common language with your team. When your team knows how you like to work and how you plan to manage them, they’re able to produce results faster. When you know how each of your direct reports likes to work and communicate, you’re able to save time when setting direction and following up.

Moodle 3.3 has landed with new features and improvements to empower educators in their online classrooms!

Moodle 3.3 has landed with new features and improvements to empower educators in their online classrooms!  | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it
Today we released a major new version, Moodle 3.3, with new integrations and improvements to user experience.

Moodle’s mission is to empower educators to improve the world and the many features in Moodle 3.3 have been designed to give teachers better control over their learning environments while improving communications between educators and students. One highlight is that it’s now much easier to use Google G-Suite or Microsoft Office in conjunction with Moodle.

Moodle Founder and CEO, Dr Martin Dougiamas, says: “I’m very happy to see the next step in Moodle’s evolution. Our team at Moodle HQ has worked hard to bring together a variety of things in this release that our community has been asking for and helping to develop.”

MOOCs: A Postmortem

MOOCs: A Postmortem | Héctor Cortez | Scoop.it

What I mean when I say that MOOCs are dead is not that MOOCs no longer exist, but that MOOCs are no longer competing against universities for the same students. Continuing with the Coursera theme here, in August they became the last of the major MOOC providers to pivot to corporate training. While I did note the departure of Daphne Koller on this blog, I didn’t even bother to mention that pivot at the time because it seemed so unremarkable, but really it is.

Becky Roehrs's curator insight, May 9, 9:50 AM

I love taking MOOC's, but would never want my (public) institution to waste money on creating or maintaining a MOOC ..what a waste of public money! Let the private schools throw their dollars away-we'll be glad to take the courses we like and ignore the rest.

It was obvious, IMO, from day one, MOOC's were not set up for a self-sustaining business model, and were building courses on the backs of faculty who were donating their time and  materials to corporations (quite a few of the MOOC providers are not non-profit, in spite of their "good intentions").

Corporate training is their only hope..until then, take the courses while they are free!

I love using comics with my English language learners!  I confess that I haven't used them the way this article has.  Click on the link below the comic and you will be directed to a lesson plan all ready to go.  I've used comics for sequencing (cut them up and students put them back in order based on the dialogue) and have covered up all the words so students have to write their own dialogues.  Try one of these ideas from the article or from me soon!

By playing the game, we expect immediate proximal outcomes:
 + decreasing boredom with learning
+ increased engagement and time spent learning
+ deeper understanding of learning concepts
 + increasing 21st century skills
Our hope is to then convert them into long-term distal outcomes, improving their lives:
