Y2K14 Loopfest

Y2K14 Loopfest | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Live looping music festival in Santa Cruz, CA - October 15 - 19, 2014

The annual Y2K International Live Looping Festival, was begun in 2001 by Rick Walker, himself a found sound/live looping artist. It is the first international live looping festival and longest running one in history.

After a 20 year professional career as a drummer/percussionist, Rick had begun the found sound/live looping portion of his career in 1995 when the Lexicon Jamman was first released to the public in a live looping trio called ‘Third Wave’ with fellow loopers, Gary Regina and Bill Walker (Rick’s brother).

To this day, in that community, there is no style or genre of music associated with the movement. The only thing that links thousands of emerging live looping artists is a strong and supportive sense of community and a love for the concept of looping live in public. In 2013, the Y2K13 International Live Looping Festival will expand to satellite festivals in London, Norwich, Paris, Berlin, Cologne, Sicily, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose and the main festival in Santa Cruz (always held in the third weekend of October). A much larger expansion of the festival is planned for summer/fall 2014 in East Asia and Europe/UK.

Joyce Pensato

Joyce Pensato | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Joyce Pensato paints exuberant, explosive large-scale likenesses of cartoon characters and comic-book heroes. Her seemingly frenzied technique – actually involving the deliberate accretion of successive layers of bold linear gestures, rapid spattering and frequent erasures – results in alternately humorous and sinister imagery. While her prima facie subject matter ranges from Batman, The Simpsons and Mickey Mouse to Felix the Cat and Elmo from Sesame Street, her artistic progenitors include Alberto Giacometti, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Philip Guston.

As well as excising her floating heads from the contexts of Gotham, Disneyland, Springfield or South Park, Pensato situates her figures in troubling psychological states and indeterminate spaces.

The true source of their meaning is concealed, not only by successive sweeps of paint, but beneath the guileless grin of Donald Duck or the Caped Crusader’s eye-less mask. Taking much of her material from her surroundings in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York – from graffitoed walls to hand-scrawled shop signs – Pensato paints almost exclusively in shop-bought black and white enamel, while also employing charcoal and pastel for smaller-scale drawings. Recently Pensato has begun painting oversized murals, often taking weeks to complete, while there are also occasional leaps away from the monochrome world she generally inhabits into sporadic bursts of colour, especially silver and gold. Her first major exhibition in London is scheduled for March 2014 and Lisson Gallery is representing Joyce Pensato in collaboration with Petzel Gallery, New York.
Joyce Pensato was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she continues to live and work.

MONDOVISION by Guillaume Delaperriere

MONDOVISION A Giovanni Sample Musical Journey a film by Guillaume Delaperriere

01-Suki (Intro) 02-Guakahal 03-Dalai In The Storm                04-Chuckey's Dream 05-My Sister The World 06-Basicamente                  07-Clap (Outro)

Guillaume Delaperriere, born in 1974, lives and works in Paris. Graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, he gathers in his creations his two artistic means of expression: the sound and the image. His work includes artistic collaborations with musicians such as the duo Air, the band Phoenix or the artist Xavier Veilhan.
He creates in 2004 a new musical concept, Giovanni Sample, which composes original pieces of music from found footage. The video loop is used as a force of creation. He applies the rules of musical rhythm to the shots sequencing. The timeline of the video editing is divided on four-beat bars. The narration articulates like a musical score and offers
to watch the music and listen to the images.
Subsequently, he chooses to shoot his own images to compose a visual music. By recording simultaneously the image and the sound from a musical and narrative angle, he creates a new kind of films. In this way, he directs a short film
in 2012, Lisboa Orchestra, which draws an original portrait of the Portuguese city through its noises, its sounds
and its music.
In 2012, he creates a 4 channel video and music installation, Video Orchestra, which was shown at Palais de Tokyo
in Paris. For this occasion, he adapted a version of Lisboa Orchestra to the 4 screens. The video editing and the several samples that compose the film soundtrack are revealed to the viewer.
Guillaume Delaperriere was selected at the 58th Salon de Montrouge contemporary art show (May 16 - June 12, 2013). The president of the 58th Salon de Montrouge was Bice Curiger, the artistic curator was Stéphane Corréard. He showed his last multi screen video and sound installation, Dharavi Orchestra.

Master Cartoonist Wallace Allan Wood (June 17, 1927 – November 2, 1981) was an American comic book writer, artist and independent publisher, best known for his work on EC Comics's Mad and Marvel's Daredevil. He was one of Mad's founding cartoonists in 1952. Although much of his early professional artwork is signed Wallace Wood, he became known as Wally Wood, a name he claimed to dislike. Within the comics community, he was also known as Woody, a name he sometimes used as a signature. In addition to Wood's hundreds of comic book pages, he illustrated for books and magazines while also working in a variety of other areas – advertising; packaging and product illustrations; gag cartoons; record album covers; posters; syndicated comic strips; and trading cards, including work on Topps' landmark Mars Attacks set. EC publisher William Gaines once stated, "Wally may have been our most troubled artist... I'm not suggesting any connection, but he may have been our most brilliant". He was the inaugural inductee into the comic book industry's Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1989, and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1992.

"C215's art captures a light, depth, and humanity that is difficult, and rare using stencils, his chosen medium. Stencils tend to flatten images and make them static, but C215 has developed a style of illustrating and stenciling that yields an impressionistic illumination of his subject's character. Even though his technique is meticulously refined, C215's work transcends the formal and seems to get to the core of compassion and belief in the human spirit.

Martin Wittfooth was born in Toronto in 1981, and spent most of his childhood in Finland, moving back to Toronto in 1993 where he earned his BAA in Illustration from Sheridan College in 2003. He currently lives and works as an illustrator and fine artist in New York City, where he earned his MFA at the School of Visual Arts. Wittfooth’s oil paintings explore disquieting themes of industry and nature, unhinged evolution, the clash of old ideologies with modern fears, and the growing shadow of the human footprint on the earth. Set in atmospheric landscapes rendered over many paint layers on canvas, linen, or wood panels, these themes are realized through a combination of symbolism, the juxtaposition of visual narratives, and the displacement of expected realities. The worlds created in Wittfooth’s paintings implore the viewer to question the status quo, to challenge that which is taken for granted, and to proceed with caution on our present course.
