Trevor Wheatley

Trevor Wheatley | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Toronto based artist Trevor Wheatley takes common slang to the streets, placing words and lingo in the public sphere where you cannot ignore it. He constructs large-scale sculptures of words like “real talk” and “nah” and installs them amongst trees and in rivers.

His often boldly colored text becomes so out of place in the wilderness, creating a very surreal site. Each installation displays strong pop-culture references of phrases commonly used. Interested in typography, Wheatley’s text-based work is range in font, color, and materials.

Wheatley takes this common language and makes it static, giving it a more permanent element. Language and slang changes so frequently, a word or phrase could be outdated as soon as Wheatley has completed the installation. Nevertheless, they bring back nostalgia and even add a bit of humor to their environment.

Slang and lingo can often bring to mind a certain type of person or stereotype that we associate with the word or phrase. Wheatley’s sculptures take us beyond these preconceived notions of language by taking them out of their usual context and placing them in a new environment. Like taking a word out of its original context can change it’s meaning, the artist gives new meaning and life to the lingo, as they are located in serene nature.

Dennis McNett

Dennis McNett | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Dennis McNett was born in 1972 and grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. He moved to New York in 2001. He has been carving surly block prints for over 18 years. His encouragement as a kid came from his blind grandfather, who told him over and over again that his drawings were good. Later influences came from the raw high-energy imagery pouring out of the early 80's skateboard and punk rock scene.

His graphic aesthetic and love for narrative work has been translated in many ways. His work ranges from larger than life Viking ship performances and parades in Philly, resurrecting Nordic giants on West Broadway in Manhattan, Dragon slayings in Oklahoma, masks, installations and sculptures to unique hand-carved wood cut pieces, traditional relief prints, and graphics.

Participating in both the fine art and design worlds, Dennis has been fortunate enough to create series’ for Anti-Hero skateboards, design shoes for Vans, have work fill the windows of Barneys, NY, and participate in the Deitch Artparade. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Juxtapoz magazine, Thrasher and Complex Magazine. He wants to live until he dies. Breathing is good.

Dan Lish

Dan Lish | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

As a part of a series of imaginative portraits, illustrator Dan Lish has being paying homage to hip-hop pioneers and legends in the dopest way. Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, MF Doom, Kool Keith, Guru, and DJ Premier are all drawn in a comic style, immersed in their own fantastic worlds of records, anthropomorphic speakers, and the cosmos. The artist says on his Tumblr blog that there will be more portraits added to the "Ego-Strip" collection soon, including art inspired by Masta Ace, Melle Mel, KRS One, and J Dilla, and prints are also on the way.

We know that hip-hop comics have been a thing for a while, but there is always room for more, and Dan Lish's art would be perfect for this genre.

TILT

TILT | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Tilt is an internationally recognized traditional graffiti artist, originating from Toulouse in South France.  A self declared “graffiti fetishist”, he learned his trade in the streets and on trains as a youngster.  In the time since he did his first tags on a skateboard ramp back in ’88, his ensuing career has been nourished and influenced by extensive travel.  Inspirational journeys have seen Tilt exhibit and leave his mark as far and wide as the U.S.A, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Australia, India, New  Zealand, Laos, Taiwan, China,  Canada, Philippines, Indonesia, and in excess of 12 countries throughout Europe.

Tilt loves demonstrating that basic, primitive graffiti can be as strong as complicated 3D lettering, wild styles or characters.  His focus on letters, high impact shapes and strong colours is a reflection of his history as a true graffiti writer, trained on the streets and in the train yards.  Following classic graffiti ideology, his individual styled name is the focal point in the majority of his paintings, in Tilt’s case a bubble letter “throw-up”.  “Throw-Up” is graffiti terminology for a writer’s spray painted name incorporating fast lines and done in one or two colours, designed for fast execution; it is the action which Tilt is most interested in, thus he utilises his throw-up styles to visually communicate the fun of creating graffiti in risky situations. Tilt  published seven books of his art and photography title  Egodrips, PhotoGraffiTiltism,  A Scotland yard, Fetish Bubble Girl, My love letters,  Magic and Destroy and Closer to God in heels.

Cinta Vidal

Cinta Vidal | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Cinta Vidal Agulló‘s paintings depict a topsy turvy yet mundane world. There’s a dream-like quality to her work, like Alice falling down the rabbit hole and remarking on the various jars of marmalade. With a background in painting backdrops for the theater, Agullo excels and creating immersive worlds that, though they have an M.C. Escher-esque sense of physics, seem like they are a part of real life.

Agullo’s paintings are lushly illustrated like one of Graeme Base’s children’s books, almost playful in the way they explore the spatial and emotional connections between the tiny figures that inhabit them. Though they are definitely surreal, we’re invited to imagine how the different parts of each painting might fit together, like the puzzle pieces of our everyday lives.

That Dad Blog

That Dad Blog | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Alan is a designer and photographer, he lives in Utah with his wife and 5 kids.

When photographer Alan Lawrence's son Wil was born in October 2013, he knew that there was something different about him. “While looking into his eyes, everything started to go into a dream state. My emotions of joy paused as everything around me seemed to slow down. The nurse may of been talking to me, but I wasn’t listening,” Alan states. “I could immediately tell from the almond shape of Wil’s eyes that he had Down Syndrome.”

Right after doctors confirmed Lawrence's suspicions, he went online to learn all that he could about Down Syndrome, but found that there was little to no positivity. The optimistic father knew that, somehow, he would change this.

Wil is the 5th child in the Lawrence family and the only one with Down Syndrome. Whenever he would crawl around on the floor, he'd attempt to lift his legs in the air and flap his arms, making his parents think that he was trying to fly. Inspired by this, the dedicated photographer decided to create upbeat images of Wil flying. By holding his son aloft and then later editing himself out of the photograph, the talented father came up with the photo series known as Wil Can Fly.

Hemmings House Pictures

Hemmings House Pictures | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

Hemmings House Pictures is an award winning film production company that specializes in using a set of tools for positive social change-making. Founded by Greg Hemmings almost a decade ago, Hemmings House and its creative production teams have produced a broad scope of world-class, impactful media. This includes television series, film & photo documentaries and commercial & social impact films in over 30 countries around the world.

In 2009, through a documentary called Sistema and later through Code Kids, Greg sensed the discovery of a new and developing personal and corporate passion. Without initially realizing it, the team had not just created a great film but uncovered a method that in both cases led to observable and sustainable positive social change. Rather than just amplifying what was already happening though these films, he had been a part of creating a movement. From this, we have developed a movement-creating film production process that we call "The System". The System combines international innovations, research, change-making methodology, community influencers and brands to create films that are used as tools for positive social impact.

Caverne du pont d'Arc - Grotte Chauvet Pont d'Arc (UNESCO)

Caverne du pont d'Arc - Grotte Chauvet Pont d'Arc (UNESCO) | Heart is a Lock, Music is the Key | Scoop.it

In the heart of Ardèche, the Pont d’Arc Cavern, the largest decorated cave replica in the world features an extraordinary collection of paintings, drawings, and engravings reproduced from the Chauvet Cave, aUNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the depths of a cave, the first artists in the history of Humanity painted a masterpiece: horses, lions, rhinos and other animals, captured in action, running, hunting and fighting.

Some 36 000 years later, engineers and artists accomplished a unique feat in the world by reconstructing this original cave, the Pont d’Arc Cavern. In doing so they rendered this extraordinary collection of paintings and engravings visible to all, transmitting the emotions felt by those who discovered the cave twenty years ago.

Upon entering the cavern in the midst of stalgmites and stactites, you will discover the world as it appeared to men and women 36 000 years ago.
The artworks are revealed in an interplay of light and shadows, bringing the walls to life and draperies from out of the darkness. Hundreds of animals of 15 different species appear, engraved with flint, or drawn with charcoal or by finger. Skilful mastery of shading and perspective techniques make them come to life.
The tour will take an hour, where you will wander along a raised walkway interspersed with ten stopping or viewing points with 27 panels on display in the cavern..
