Everything You Need to Know About Adrenal Fatigue

Everything You Need to Know About Adrenal Fatigue | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it
Your health is on a continuum. On one end you have optimal health, and on the other, you have chronic illness. Your adrenal health works in the same way.

The primary role of your adrenal glands is to produce and regulate the stress hormone cortisol. Your adrenal glands also produce sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, and they produce your neurotransmitters, adrenaline (epinephrine), norepinephrine, and dopamine. These hormones and neurotransmitters regulate your metabolism and communicate with other organs, like your brain, kidneys, and reproductive system. However, chronic stress can suppress your adrenal glands, causing them to release insufficient amounts of these necessary hormones.

Kathy Heidebrecht's curator insight, November 25, 2013 9:59 PM

Ingredients:

1 cup red quinoa

1 cup white quinoa

3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced

1 large shallot, diced

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 tbsp olive oil

1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted

1/2 cup fruit juice sweetened cranberries

1 tbsp cumin

1 tsp red pepper flakes

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Sea salt & pepper to taste

Bring 4 cups of water to boil, adding your quinoa in and turning down to low. Let the pot simmer for 8 – 10 minutes, turning off the heat when the water is absorbed. Leave the pot covered and let it stand for while the rest of the meal cooks.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Toss your diced sweet potatoes, shallot and garlic in a large bowl with olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper. Grease a baking sheet with cold pressed olive oil spray and spread the potato mixture out. Roast for 15 – 20 minutes, flipping the sweet potatoes over half way through.

Add the roasted vegetables and quinoa together in a large bowl. Toss in your cranberries and toasted pecans and fluff to combine. Now add your seasonings: apple cider vinegar, cumin, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Give the bowl a few gentle tosses and you’re done!

Either serve immediately or refrigerate overnight and warm up in a 200 degree oven the next day!

Serves 8 – 10 as a side.

74-Year-Old with Weeks to Live Beats Cancer with Wheatgrass ("grass of life - new superfood")

74-Year-Old with Weeks to Live Beats Cancer with Wheatgrass ("grass of life - new superfood") | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it
This story is about a 74 year old man with stomach cancer, and how he ignored toxic chemotherapy only to overcome his disease with wheatgrass.

Danny refused the chemotherapy, even if it made the doctors furious. Instead, he decided to go with a natural, nutritional approach. He remembered hearing about the healing properties of wheatgrass from a friend years earlier, and the more he thought about it and researched it, the more convinced he became that this could be a solution. Using decades of acquired skill in farming and tending to land, Danny went back to his farm to grow tons of wheatgrass.

“I didn’t know what to expect, but I was determined to give it a go,” recalls Danny. “Within seven days the burning sensation I had in my side was gone and I was beginning to feel a lot better. I stopped taking the tablets which had been prescribed and I haven’t taken one since. A month later the pain had completely disappeared and I knew I was on the mend. The wheatgrass was working. I had made the right decision to reject the advice of the doctors.”

Four years later, Danny is alive, healthy, and cancer-free. More than 2,600 people have beaten a path to Danny McDonald’s farmhouse to discover how he utilized something as simple as wheatgrass to beat cancer.

Trees Can Capture Up To 60% Of All Particulate Matter From Road Exhaust

Trees Can Capture Up To 60% Of All Particulate Matter From Road Exhaust | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

Trees planted along a city street screen residents from sun and noise—and from tiny particles that pollute urban air. A new study shows that tree leaves can capture more than 50% of the particulate matter that’s a prime component of urban pollution and a trigger for disease (Environ. Sci. Technol. 2013, DOI: 10.1021/es404363m).

In urban settings, particulates come primarily from car exhaust, brake pad wear, and road dust and can contain metals, such as iron and lead. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies particulates in three size ranges: less than 1 μm (PM1), up to 2.5 μm (PM2.5), and up to 10 μm (PM10) in diameter. These particles are tiny enough for people to inhale and can exacerbate heart disease, asthma, and other health conditions.

Researchers want to understand how trees capture particles so that urban planners might eventually take advantage of these natural tools for mitigating pollution. However, modeling this process is challenging because air flow and particle movement on a street follow complex fluid dynamics. Models have shown wildly varying results for just how much particulate matter trees can trap, with some as low as 1% and others as high as 60%.
