Why Are Antioxidants So Important?

Why Are Antioxidants So Important? | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it
The Importance of Antioxidants: Another Reason To Eat Loads Of Fruit.

So apparently antioxidants are really, really important for maintaining a healthy life, who knew? Ensuring a good amount of antioxidants in your diet can reduce the chances of cancer, lower high blood pressure, improve wrinkles  and help your heart stay healthy amongst many other benefits. They’re job is to fight ‘free-radicals’ which are the causes of many health problems and are produced due to stress, processed food, smoking, and if you think those factors don’t apply to you well, they’re even caused by UV light and pollution. These things are like bad movie sequels: everywhere, unstoppable and harmful.

How Much Lead In Baby Food Is Too Much?

How Much Lead In Baby Food Is Too Much? | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it
How Much Lead In Baby Food Is Too Much? Seems like a silly question? Any lead should bee too much, right? Not according to the law.
Steve Kingsley's insight:

My understanding is that the lead content is “naturally occurring,” i.e. absorbed from the soil where the source of the ingredients are grown. That means it's variable from day to day, farm to farm, region to region, etc., etc. How does one protect against that - and at what price?

Blood Pressure Drugs Found to Increase Breast Cancer Risk ("there are safer ways to fight hi-blood")

Blood Pressure Drugs Found to Increase Breast Cancer Risk ("there are safer ways to fight hi-blood") | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it
Some research shows that women taking blood pressure drugs have about a 250 percent greater risk of developing some types of breast cancer than other women.

Nearly one-third (32.7%) of American women have high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While many individuals with high blood pressure change their diet and increase activity levels to keep blood pressure under control, others are content to rely wholly on the chemical concoction prescribed by their doctor. There are many problems with blood pressure medications though—one of which is a significant increase in the risk of breast cancer for women.

According to a recent study published in the journal Internal Medicine, women taking calcium channel blockers like nicardipine (Cardene) and amlodipine (Norvasc) have about a 250 percent greater risk of developing some types of breast cancer than other women.

Researchers with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle looked at nearly 3,000 women, 891 of which were cancer-free, 905 of which had been diagnosed with ductal breast cancer and 1,055 of which had been diagnosed with lobular breast cancer. About 40 percent of women in each group was taking or had taken calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure.

Health IT will dictate how health is provided in the future

Health IT will dictate how health is provided in the future | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

Health IT is hot and health IT will be leading the revolution and health IT will transform itself and health care. The big (and rather comfortable) enterprise health IT will just get stronger and bigger to better support industry consolidation.

The little data feeder and analytics health IT will service the big health IT. It is very possible that some of these new consumer apps will gain huge market share and become big health IT (just big, not enterprise), and most likely this is why venture capital is investing. Take home lesson for little health IT: you can’t beat them, so the best strategy is to join them. And if you think something is missing from this (too) long dissertation, like patient empowerment for example, think again.

Yes, we will have health IT ATMs where we can get a little information when stranded in a strange city, but when was the last time you walked into a Chase bank and cashed a Bank of America check? And when was the last time your Fidelity financial advisor was able to peruse your various accounts at your current bank and all banks you used in the past, to better advise you on saving for retirement? Come to think of it, when was the last time you switched banks? And how much transactional history was interoperated between your old bank and your new bank?
