Investigative Report: Soaring Pesticide Use and Poisoning Linked to GE Crop Production

Investigative Report: Soaring Pesticide Use and Poisoning Linked to GE Crop Production | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

Beyond Pesticides, October 22, 2013

INVESTIGATIVE REPORT FINDS SOARING PESTICIDE USE AND POISONING LINKED TO GMO CROP PRODUCTION

An Associated Press (AP) investigation links the effect of their work to soaring pesticide use and resulting health problems. According to the AP, the advent of “no-till” farming methods in Argentina with the use of genetically engineered (GE) crops and companion pesticides has caused significant health impacts in farming towns abutting GE fields. Since the introduction of these practices in Argentina by agrichemical companies such as Monsanto, cancer rates have skyrocketed and the number of birth defects has quadrupled.... http://www.beyondpesticides.org/dailynewsblog/?p=12090

Research: Pineapple Enzyme Kills Cancer Without Killing You | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

In this groundbreaking study, an enzyme extracted from pineapple known as bromelain was found superior to the chemo-drug 5-fluorouracil at treating cancer in the animal model.

What is so remarkable about this research is that 5-FU has been used as a cancer treatment for nearly 40 years, and has been relatively unsuccessful due to its less than perfect selectivity at killing cancer, often killing and/or irreversibly damaging healthy cells and tissue, as well...

How the world’s oceans could be running out of fish

How the world’s oceans could be running out of fish | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

It has been some time since most humans lived as hunter-gatherers – with one important exception. Fish are the last wild animal that we hunt in large numbers. And yet, we may be the last generation to do so.

Entire species of marine life will never be seen in the Anthropocene (the Age of Man), let alone tasted, if we do not curb our insatiable voracity for fish. Last year, global fish consumption hit a record high of 17 kg (37 pounds) per person per year, even though global fish stocks have continued to decline. On average, people eat four times as much fish now than they did in 1950.

Around 85% of global fish stocks are over-exploited, depleted, fully exploited or in recovery from exploitation. Only this week, a report suggested there may be fewer than 100 cod over the age of 13 years in the North Sea between the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. The figure is still under dispute, but it’s a worrying sign that we could be losing fish old enough to create offspring that replenish populations.

I'm one of the culprits... maybe we should concentrate on producing "bioengineered" fish meat instead of hamburger meat. Cows are certainly not an endangered species!

When Edible Plants Turn Their Defenses On Us

When Edible Plants Turn Their Defenses On Us | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

23 October 2013, NPR, Rae Ellen Bichell -- "Some everyday foods contain toxins that could wreak bodily havoc under the wrong circumstances.

Fruits and vegetables are unquestionably essential to a healthful diet.

But there's another side to some of these plants that, thankfully, most people never see: the tiny amounts of toxins within them. The minute amounts of poison found in many seeds, leaves and roots are the result of the protracted arms race between plants and the animals that try to eat them. It's the reason why you've never shelled a cashew (the shells might make you break out in a poison ivy-style rash) or eaten green potato fries (read on for details). ..."

How to Quit Sugar

How to Quit Sugar | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it
I am so sick of the "grab an apple when you want chocolate!" advice about sugar cravings. This obviously doesn't work -- when I want a brownie, a freaking handful of raisins just simply is not going to cut it.

I'm totally oversimplifying, but here is the basic idea: In Chinese health theory, all foods fall on a spectrum from Yin to Yang, with sugar being on the most extreme Yin end, and animal foods (meat, eggs) and salty foods on the extreme Yang end of the spectrum. As our bodies try to maintain equilibrium, if we eat too many foods on the far end of this seesaw, we then crave foods from the other end...

How Sweet: Chocolate Bars Can Now Be Wrapped in Paper Made from Cocoa Husk Waste

How Sweet: Chocolate Bars Can Now Be Wrapped in Paper Made from Cocoa Husk Waste | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

23 October 2013, Sustainable Design -- "UK paper manufacturer  James Cropper has developed another innovative recycling process that incorporates cocoa husk waste from chocolate production into unbleached cellulose fiber to produce a food-grade paper. The company says turning the otherwise wasted skins of many of the 3.5 million metric tons of cocoa beans produced each year into paper could be a significant breakthrough for the food and packaging industries.

The paper is now in production and certified for use in the food supply chain, including as wrapping for chocolate bars.

The company says that unlike other cocoa recycling processes, theirs does not require burning or gradual degradation of the husk fibers, resulting in a light, cocoa-colored paper that requires no additional artificial dyes.

Apparently, a staggering 10 metric tons of cocoa husk waste is created for every single metric ton of dry cocoa bean produced. ..."

Farmed Salmon Are Not a Sustainable Alternative

Farmed Salmon Are Not a Sustainable Alternative | Healthy Recipes and Tips for Healthy Living | Scoop.it

Yesterday the Washington Post published a dangerously misleading article about farmed salmon. Lauding improvements in the salmon farming industry, they assert that farmed salmon is a viable alternative to wild-caught fish. We'd like to set the record straight: farmed salmon is a terrible choice for our oceans.

When you eat farmed salmon, you're really eating another fish called the jack mackerel, or another wild species like sardines or anchovies. Salmon are carnivorous, and farms feed their fish food pellets made from these smaller wild fish. The problem is that many of these species, especially jack mackerel, are dangerously overfished.

For most Chilean farms, it takes about three pounds of wild fish to feed one pound of salmon. So you are likely eating three pounds of jack mackerel or other wild species -- which are likely in trouble -- when sit down to eat your pound of farmed salmon. A small number of Chilean farms have managed to reduce this ratio to one to one. But even then, it still takes a pound of wild fish to make your pound of farmed salmon.
